Job Purpose Summary:
The Trainee Underwriter is a varied role that allows a talented individual to build expertise and competencies in the areas of data management, customer relationship management and marketing. The successful candidate should be curious to acquire a deep knowledge from a small group of specialist founders, on the UK small business lending market. While the role is post entry level, you will be working directly with a seasoned and experienced team, so the opportunity for learning is significant. The role covers 5 main areas of responsibility:
Extracting Company Information from various sources and articulating them into standard format for committee meetings: assist the executive with the preparation of credit committee for new customers, by gathering information from a wide variety of inputs, including algorithmic outputs, online research, broker notes, as well as basic Excel calculations to cover all aspects of underwriting. Be involved in all aspects of the preparation and making financing offers to customers.
Auditing Bank Statement data and arranging this data in a structured format for algorithmic processing: assist with the preparation of bank statement data for new customers in Excel – this requires following a set of documented procedures precisely, and enhancing the documented procedure where shortfalls are found and/or as we ‘learn more’ about any particular process – ask questions to build your understanding of the entire underwriting process, but also, highlight gaps in data, identify formats which are inconsistent, as well as numeric incongruencies and report these for correction, before signing off
Customer Relationship Management: Be involved in all aspects of preparing, gathering info from and making offers to customers, including following up with customers to complete their application data on our Web based ERP system, and distributing documentation in an accurate and timeous way, monitor lead pipeline as well as success of quotations. Keep CRM system up-to-date, and monitor ongoing customer engagement.
Direct operational support: ad hoc support as needed to develop and build the business – the requirements here change as the business evolves, so an element of flexibility and a commitment to high quality completion of tasks is required. One day, you will be running sub tasks to completion by managing the workflows of a number of external developers, on another day, you may be collecting and summarizing documentation to manage our requirement of our service provides, on another day you may be called upon to audit processes, or documenting processes with the view to outsourcing the well understood tasks.
Marketing (adhoc): prepare and manage content and case studies for regular targeted e-mailing campaigns to existing and prospective customers, improve our visibility by pro-actively maintaining the company’s profile on social media
The Trainee Underwriter will work closely with and under the management of the COO and will potentially take on further responsibilities if he/she displays the right aptitude and attitude and can establish a track record of accuracy, reliability and delivering results.
Training will be provided but as with any start up environment, much will be ‘learning by doing’, which will require a high degree of problem solving.
