Purpose:

NERC/BAS has taken delivery of its new polar research vessel, the RRS Sir David Attenborough. This was part of a £300M programme of works, which also included a number of land-based infrastructure projects, such as wharf upgrades, station buildings and services improvements at the research stations, invested in improving our Antarctic infrastructure. These projects are known collectively as the Antarctic Infrastructure Modernisation Programme (AIMP). The next phase of this programme, with significant spend (c. a further £300M) over the next ten years, is now underway. The programme includes air capability and infrastructure improvements, the decarbonisation of the UK’s main research station at Rothera and delivery of a new zero emissions station at Signy. All projects have very significant environmental, renewable energy and sustainability drivers.

NERC/BAS has entered into long-term partnering contracts with a Technical Advisor and a Construction Partner in order to deliver this challenging programme.

BAS has set up a Construction Delivery Management Team and a Project Support Team within AIMP. This role is to support the AIMP Sustainability Manager in embedding sustainability processes into the design, procurement, construction, installation, commissioning, training, handover and transition into service of the projects within the AIMP.

Duties:

  • Support the Sustainability Manager in delivering sustainable outcomes within the Antarctic Infrastructure Modernisation Programme.
  • Support on the integration of UKRI and other Environmental Sustainability Strategies into the AIMP projects.
  • Support on the implementation of the AIMP Sustainability Strategy to set objectives and targets for each project.
  • Support the AIMP Sustainability Assurance Group (internal BAS stakeholders, construction partners, and technical advisors) to set the strategic direction of sustainability work across the programme; and assure individual projects. This will involve collating and analysing data submitted as evidence to achieve targets and producing reports and presentations to communicate progress to working groups and senior management.
  • Assist in the coordination of the BREEAM & CEEQUAL project assessment for all AIMP projects.
  • Support the BAS Net Zero Carbon Lead in achieving the organisation’s 2040 Net Zero Carbon Strategy.
  • Support the BAS Environment Office in achieving the organisation’s Environmental Sustainability Strategy objectives namely to:

o to lead on Antarctic environmental affairs

o to continually improve environmental performance

o to conserve biodiversity, science and heritage values

o to exceed compliance and drive best practice. This will involve supporting in the areas of EIA, waste management, biosecurity, protected area management, hazardous materials storage and pollution prevention.

  • Assist in the contract administration of the sustainability-related NEC4 Task Orders, Time Charge Orders and Works Orders with the Technical Advisor and the Construction Partner for the projects, including progress reporting, progress meetings, change management, programme and risk management.
  • Support the communication of the sustainability work of the AIMP to the wider community.
  • Prepare highlight reports and any other sustainability reports required by the programme.
  • This role may also include the opportunity for secondment into the Construction Partner and/or Technical Advisor organisations for periods of up to 6 months to improve breadth of experience and general upskilling.

The role holder will be required to have the appropriate level of security screening/vetting required for the role. UKRI reserves the right to run or re-run security clearance as required during the course of employment.
