The North East & Cumbria Transport and Retrieval Service (NECTAR) is looking to recruit adult/paediatric nurses and ODP’s into the role of Trainee Transport Practitioner. This is an exciting opportunity to join our rapidly expanding service. NECTAR is based at the Campus of Ageing and Vitality, Newcastle upon Tyne and has purpose built, state of the art education facilities and custom designed intensive care ambulances.

NECTAR is a regional service designed to ensure that all critically ill adults and children receive outstanding care whilst being transported by expert teams. The NECTAR service provides medical and practitioner led transfers which is dependent on the level of care the patient requires.

These posts are an excellent opportunity to train as a transport practitioner in a developing service. You will initially be employed as a Band 5 Trainee Transport Practitioner whilst completing specific transport competencies. Our competencies take in to account an individual’s experience and allows for further education and training to take place should it be needed. Once all competencies are complete you will automatically progress into a Band 6 role as a NECTAR transport practitioner.

This post is a training post, you will be given an individualised training package and supported by our clinical educator who will meet with you regularly to guide and supervise you through the programme.

This is a suitable post for an individual who wishes to develop and extend specialized skills in adult and children’s transport medicine. Once competent you will contribute to the expanding service at the North East and Cumbria’s Transport Service (NECTAR), providing high quality care and putting patients at the heart of everything you do.

Band 5

This is a development post working under the supervision of an experienced transport practitioner and medical staff.
  • Accountable for assessing, planning, delivering and evaluating high quality patient care
  • Provide effective support to both patient and carers throughout their care pathway.
  • Act as role model, teacher and supervisor for junior staff and students, participating in mentor and preceptorship programmes
  • To abide by Trust policies and procedures.
  • Provide support for and depending on experience deputise for practitioner in charge in their absence.
  • Act as patient advocate in accordance with Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code/Health and Care Professional Council (HCPC) Code.
  • Work collaboratively as an effective member of MDT.
Band 6
  • The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust defines this role as a qualified nurse/Practitioner where the primary purpose is to provide guidance and support based on advanced level knowledge to patients, carers and health professionals concerning a specific disease/condition.
Within the sphere of specialist practice:
o Is working towards advanced knowledge and skills within specialist sphere of practice.
o Contributes to the facilitation of the planning, delivery and evaluation of
care pathways for a designated group of patients.
o Support the development of nursing practice within the specialist field and contribute to the body of nursing knowledge.
o Contributes to training and education within specialist area.

Please note it is a requirement of The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust that all successful candidates who require a DBS for the post they have been offered pay for their DBS certificate. The method of payment is a salary deduction from your first month’s pay.
