Job description
This position is offered at Band 6 Annex 21. The salary scale for the post is £37,831 per annum rising in annual increments to £46,100 per annum pro-rata. As a trainee your pay is determined as a percentage of pay for qualified staff, in accordance with Annex 21 of the Agenda for Change terms and conditions. As you are more than 2 years from completion of training you will receive 70% of the Band 6, maximum for qualified staff which equates to £32 270 per annum in year 1, in year two 75% which equates to £34,575. On completion of your training you will be placed on either the first pay point of the appropriate pay band or the next pay point above your training salary. The Role
An exciting opportunity has arisen within NHS Lanarkshire Spiritual Care and Wellbeing Service for Trainee Chaplains. We are looking to appoint two candidates, these posts are based across NHS Lanarkshire.
The Trainee Chaplain will contribute to the work of Spiritual Care and Wellbeing and will support patients, families and staff within NHS Lanarkshire. The post holders will work as part of the team with Chaplains, Staff Care Specialists, Assistant Practitioners and volunteers and will participate on the 24/7 on-call rota.
A 24 month structured programme of support education and learning will be provided including formal education.
Successful candidates will:
- Be educated to degree level and be eligible for entry onto the Postgrad Certificate Healthcare Chaplaincy.
- Have experience of providing pastoral support, counselling or active listening
- Be able to demonstrate continuous professional development.

What we'll need you to bring
- Educated to degree level or equivalent in a relevant discipline, e.g. theology, religious studies, spiritual care.
- Have experience in delivering spiritual care e.g. pastoral work in a faith community, chaplaincy, counselling.
- Have a contemporary knowledge base of different religions and faiths and the ability to work harmoniously in an ecumenical/interfaith environment and with those from different life stance groups.
- Have experience in making presentations, teaching or group facilitation.
- Have a detailed knowledge of NHS Lanarkshire Spiritual Care Policy together with a working knowledge of HDL (2002) 76 Scottish Executive Guidelines on Spiritual Care in Scotland, the data Protection Act, the Freedom of Information Act and the NHS Lanarkshire Board’s policy on confidentiality.
It would be great if you also have
- Training in Healthcare Chaplaincy such as CPE.
- Facilitator in Values-based Reflective Practice (VBRP).
- Trained in Community Chaplaincy Listening (CCL).
- Experience of providing spiritual care or wellbeing support in a healthcare setting.
- Knowledge of National documents pertaining to Spiritual Care and Wellbeing such as the Service Standards and Capability Framework.
- Knowledge of current research in Spiritual Care and Wellbeing.
- Demonstrate a clear understanding of the role of the Healthcare Chaplain or Staff Wellbeing practitioners
- Ability and experience to perform research and audit.

Please note this is a part time post and the salary for this position will be pro-rata.
Location and Working Pattern
This role will be based in Spiritual Care and Wellbeing within NHS Lanarkshire.
The working pattern for this role will be 9am-5pm(core hours) however there will a requirement to be part of a 24/7 on call rota.
