Overview:
First Military Recruitment is working in partnership with our client to recruit a Trainee Group Security
Officer. The successful candidate will be part of the wider security team covering hours across two college campuses (primarily Newcastle-under-Lyme but with some time spent at Stafford as required).
As well as providing a welcoming, safe, and secure environment for learners and staff, you will also maintain security of the College premises and grounds throughout the hours of business.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Regularly patrol the College premises, grounds, and car parks and to monitor activities and provide a visible security presence.
- Act as point of contact for learners on issues relating to their security and behaviour within
College, and to provide instructions, guidance, and advice as appropriate.
- Ensure that the College premises are properly used for their appointed purposes, and to prevent any inappropriate use or unacceptable practice.
- Assist in maintaining acceptable standards of discipline and behaviour throughout the
College, and to provide a first response to incidents which may compromise security.
- Assist in the receiving and delivery of parcels and packages across the campuses.
- Monitor use of the College car parks, to provide advice to users where required and to intervene where parking is inappropriate or causes obstruction or inconvenience.
- Use data from the College’s CCTV and security systems for maintaining security, and for the investigation of incidents and occurrences.
- Regularly review stored CCTV data, to provide copies to Police or emergency services when requested, and to ensure that records are logged and filed efficiently for further reference.
- Maintain detailed records of all security related incidents in accordance with College procedure, and to provide reports as necessary.
- Investigate incidents where necessary and to provide such additional information as may be appropriate.
- Monitor visitors to the College, to provide them with guidance and assistance where necessary and to ensure, as far as possible, that no unauthorised persons enter the College premises.
- Challenge anti-social behaviour in College such as inappropriate language, aggressive behaviour, vandalism, graffiti, and litter.
- Liaise with the local Police and with security providers and to keep abreast of best practice and new initiatives in security and crime prevention.
- Advise management on matters relating to security and proper use of the College premises and facilities.
- Be aware of, and maintain compliance with, all departmental and College requirements relating to Health and Safety.
- Undertake any other duties which may arise from time to time and are commensurate with the post.
Skills and Experience:
- A good general standard of education.
- As a Trainee, is willing to work towards an appropriate qualification in areas such as security,
CCTV, or Safeguarding.
- Willing to work towards gaining an SIA Licence to ensure compliance with licensed premises requirements at both campuses
- Has significant experience of working with young people in an education/youth work setting or other relevant area.
- Can use initiative and judgement in dealing confidently and decisively with breaches of security or in situations which may compromise security.
- Physically active and can undertake regular indoor and outdoor patrols on the College campus.
- A reasonable level of strength and fitness to meet the physical demands of the role and the ability to move heavy or bulky items using the correct Manual Handling techniques.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and able to deal clearly and courteously with the public, students and College staff and management.
- Can work well as part of a team and able to work co-operatively with colleagues.
- Can communicate effectively with students and able to gain their respect and trust.
- A willingness to undertake continuous professional development.
- A good understanding of equal opportunities and a positive attitude towards them.
- Has a good understanding of safeguarding issues and their importance to the College.
- Hold a valid full driving licence and able to travel between the two campuses at Newcastle- under-Lyme and Stafford.
In return our client offers:
- A salary of £20,000 (with a pay review after approximately 12 months when Trainee period is complete).
- 37-hour working week – 3-shift pattern (early, day, late) – earliest start will be 6am, latest finish will be 9pm and no overnight shifts – shifts will change during summer holiday.
- 24 days holiday + Public Holidays + 2-week break at Christmas.
