A fantastic opportunity has arisen for two highly motivated individuals to join the mitochondrial genomics team, working with the Newcastle NHS Highly Specialised Service for Rare Mitochondrial Disorders, as trainee Clinical Scientists. The successful candidates will undergo an equivalence training programme during an initial 3 year training contract at band 6, with the expectation that HCPC registration will be gained as a Clinical Scientist in Genomics. On registration the post holders will automatically move to a band 7 permanent Clinical Scientist position. All applicants should have direct experience of the work of a diagnostic genetics service and a minimum of a 2nd class degree in an appropriate scientific subject, preferably with significant genetic content. Relevant higher qualifications such as an MSc or PhD in Genetics would be an advantage, as would experience of genomic testing for mitochondrial disorders.
These vacancies represent an excellent opportunity to attain a position as a state registered Clinical Scientist in Genomics whilst working work within a Highly Specialised Multidisciplinary Diagnostic Service and contributing to the delivery of genomic testing for mitochondrial disease patients both within the UK and across the world.

- The GLH operates as a network to deliver genomic testing, as outlined in the National Genomic Test Directory, across a broad range of Genomic specialties including both cancer and rare diseases. We provide a coordinated and comprehensive service to deliver standardised outcomes, on-going consolidation, quality improvement, and adoption of new technologies
The successful candidates will be highly motivated and reliable individuals and will join a team of approximately fifteen scientific and technical staff in the Mitochondrial Highly Specialised laboratory based in the Medical School at Newcastle University, Newcastle upon Tyne. They will be required to deliver (under supervision) coordination of testing for patients with suspected mitochondrial disease, in addition to preparing reports and liaising closely with clinical colleagues and all members of the laboratory team. A broad knowledge of diagnostic genetics and good communication, team working and supervisory skills are essential, along with excellent attention to detail. In addition to the diagnostic workload, the successful applicants will be expected to be personally responsible for their own training and records, subject to the supervision and direction of the Training Officer or other designated senior staff.
