Please note that a £5,000 per annum market supplement (pro-rated and non-pensionable) is available for the successful applicant on provision of proof of current membership of an approved accounting body and evidence they hold the appropriate accountancy qualifications.

Due to career development, the University Finance Office is seeking to appoint a Finance Manager to join the half of the Departmental Services Team that supports the Academic Departments. The role is full time (36.5 hours per week) but a part-time appointment may be considered, with some flexibility over the course of the year subject to the operational requirements of the role.

The University Finance Office supports business planning and innovation to maximise the financial resources available to the University and create the long-term sustainable financial platform required for future growth. You will join the Departmental Services Team which is well established and a supportive environment in which to build a career at the University. It is primarily engaged in management accounting and Finance business partnering. You will provide accurate and timely management information and analysis to senior University management, Heads of Departments and other stakeholders in order to aid planning, control and decision-making, especially in the deployment of University resources and maximisation of income. You will have specific responsibility for managing the University’s TRAC process, ensuring that sector guidance is adhered to and validating results through liaison with a wide range of stakeholders. TRAC (Transparent Approach to Costing) is a reporting requirement for all universities looking across the complete range of the University’s activities - Teaching, Research and Other.

With a professional accounting qualification and current membership of a recognised CCAB professional body, and broad experience within a finance function, including financial modelling. You will need to have excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders. You will be expected to manage your own time effectively to deliver a programme of work to strict deadlines. You will either be an advanced Excel user or have the capability and enthusiasm to become one. Prior knowledge and experience of the Higher Education sector is desirable but not essential.

Job Description

JOB PURPOSE

To provide accurate and timely management information to senior University management, Chairs of academic departments, Heads of administrative departments, Directors of commercial activities and for inclusion in reports to external government bodies, in order to aid planning, control and decision-making, especially in the deployment of University resources.


DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

1.To be responsible for the preparation of financial information for academic and administrative departments and commercial activities, including financial accounts if applicable, management accounts, reports to committees, budgets, five-year plans, cash flow forecasts and project assessments.

2. To assist in the preparation and review of the University group’s management and statutory accounts and five-year plans.

3. To provide financial advice and information to Heads of Departments, other academic members of staff and managers of a wide variety of departments.

4. Special projects, usually involving preparing full business plans and critically appraising such new ventures.

5. To offer constructive criticism, advice and counsel on a variety of financial matters, including possibly pricing policy, market analysis, business risk and performance indicators.

6. To service Boards or University committees, including the preparation of agenda, minutes and papers on issues requiring decisions.

7. Contract review and appraisal to ensure compliance with University procedures, best practice and commercial application.

8. Routine work and ad hoc assignments as required.
