Position Overview:
The Business Engineer I is directly responsible for the on-going efforts to improve and optimize internal business processes, as well as those of our clients and prospective clients. Specific job tasks include reviewing, analyzing, and making suggestions for the improvement of end-to-end operational workflows. Additionally, the Business Engineer I participates in business planning, needs analysis, and business risk assessment, leads process redesign/re-engineering engagements, and consults with the customer on how to best support their area through the effective use of process improvement methodology.
Primary Responsibilities:
Client Management
- Proactively communicates and collaborates with external and internal customers to analyze information needs and requirements and delivers project artifacts as needed
- Values internal and external clients and responds to their needs as they arise
- Establishes effective working relationship with clients
- Follows established communication guidelines
- Uses good judgment in what and how to communicate with clients
- Supports Commercial Management, Sales, and Marketing in discussions of technical details regarding proposed Business Solutions and Service Offerings
Analysis and Solution Definition
- Elicits requirements using interviews, document analysis, requirements workshops, surveys, site visits, business process descriptions, use cases, scenarios, business analysis, and task and workflow analysis
- Critically evaluates information gathered from multiple sources, reconciles conflicts, decomposes high-level information into details, abstracts up from low-level information to a general understanding, and distinguishes user requests from the underlying true needs
- Documents and redesigns business processes and workflow maps utilizing lean and six sigma methodologies
Technical Solution Delivery
- Documents and maps recommended business solutions and corresponding requirements
- Redesigns business processes to maximize quality and efficiency
- Collaborates with business and technology stakeholders and subject matter experts to establish the technical vision and analyze trade-offs between usability and performance needs
- Able to provide consulting expertise to stakeholders regarding business process improvements and innovative solutions
- Conducts six sigma projects integrating industry-standard tools in order to establish data-driven solutions
Communication
- Listens to others and accepts input from team members
- Clearly articulates ideas and thoughts verbally
- Accurately prepares written business correspondence (to include presentations) that is coherent, grammatically correct, effective and professional
- All other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science degree in an Engineering discipline or closely related field or equivalent work experience
- At least 1 year of client interface experience required (ex: technical sales, consulting, product management, client management, or business development)
- At least six months experience in process re-design or re-engineering for maximizing quality and efficiency
- Six Sigma Green Belt Certification or equivalent work experience is desirable
- Experience in Project Management is desirable
- Must be able to travel
Required Skills:
- Strong working knowledge of Six Sigma and/or Lean Methodologies and tools
- Must have high proficiency in creating process workflows and maps, as well as documenting business requirements
- Advanced level skills with Microsoft Office suite of tools including Word, Excel, Visio, and PowerPoint
- Effective analytic and problem-solving skills
- Creative and innovative
- Must have excellent English written and verbal communication skills
- Able to effectively communicate high-level concepts and low-level details
- Able to interact professionally with a diverse group, executives, managers, and subject matter experts
- Able to work with minimal supervision
- Able to prioritize workload and meet deadlines
- Able to successfully engage in multiple initiatives simultaneously
- Knowledge of the Software Development Life Cycle and related concepts is a plus
