How you'll make a difference
Do you have strong IT skills and an interest in Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and mapping Data?
You will use your strong IT skills and use a wide range of technologies such as GIS and electronic data capture tools and processes.
What will you be doing?
On a daily basis, you will be working closely and alongside existing experienced staff in our GIS team, using multiple web mapping and cartography systems to work together to support council wide delivery and services.
You will assist the GIS team and will learn how to:
- capture geospatial information.
- take, record and document appropriate geospatial measurements to the required specification.
- interact with other council teams and system users to amend and manage council mapping datasets.
- perform calculations and use geospatial data.
- understand the principles of mapping and geographic information sciences and accuracy, scale, currency and fitness for purpose of hardcopy and/or digital maps, drawings, imagery and plans.
- take, record and document geospatial measurements to the required specification.
- understand the principles relating to land ownership and boundaries and the appropriate permissions required to undertake geospatial survey work.
Throughout your 24 month apprenticeship, we will allocate you a Line Manager and a workplace mentor to give you guidance and support in completing your Level 3 Geospatial Survey Technician apprenticeship which requires weekly day release learning at Exeter College’s specialist construction centre during term time - Exeter College, Falcon House, Falcon Road, Sowton Industrial Estate, Exeter, Devon, EX2 7LB.
Things we need you to know:
All candidates that successfully reach the interview stages will be required to provide a 10 minute presentation as part of the recruitment process. Candidates who do not provide a presentation at interview will not progress through the recruitment process.
The salary for this apprenticeship is set at the current National Minimum Wage.

We are currently working with a mix of working in the office or at home, which is determined in line with the requirements of the role and needs of the department.
College attendance requires weekly day release learning at Exeter College.You’ll be completing a Level 3 Geospatial Survey Technician apprenticeship which will provide you with a highly transferable set of knowledge and skills, which you gain by working for us.
When you aren’t learning with Exeter College, the rest of your time will be spent with us learning on the job.
In addition to your workplace mentor, you will also be allocated an assessor by Exeter College who will complete regular progress reviews with you. These reviews are simply to make sure you are on track and happy.
This apprenticeship also requires you to complete an end point assessment which will see you demonstrate what you have learned as an apprentice and how it can be applied in any other organisation. This will be another chance for you to shine!

What we need from you
- You will ideally hold a minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade 4 or C or above including maths and English or willingness to undertake Functional Skills in maths and English alongside your apprenticeship programme.
- It is essential that you have the drive and willingness to learn new things and be committed to gaining your qualification.
- We require you to have a high degree of accuracy with all assigned duties.
- You will have good IT skills including knowledge of standard software packages and ability to be trained on bespoke software and databases.
- You will be a good team player with the ability to communicate effectively with colleagues to co-ordinate and prioritise tasks.
