About the Role:
You will report to our Maintenance Team Leader, to ensure all maintenance work is completed in a timely manner. You’ll be responsible for carrying out servicing and organising of diesel train units to recognised standards and procedures, whilst playing an active role in the Northern Team at our Preston depot.
It’s an exciting time to join our engineering team as we are transforming and developing skillsets, to help us get the right people, on the right units, at the right time. You’ll need to work a range of shifts, from the early hours of the morning until late at night, plus weekends and Bank Holidays, it’s vital that you’re flexible and that you live within 60 minutes’ drive of our Preston depot.

Key responsibilities:
This is a varied and challenging role, but here is a taste of what your day-to-day activities could include:
- Maintaining and servicing our trains to ensure they are safe to go into service for our colleagues and passengers and checking that the train environment is up to our market leading standards
- You’ll be responsible for the tanking of our trains to ensure they can go out in a timely manner
- In Preston, this role involves being the PIC (Person in charge) This means accepting train arrival and organising train departures, by communicating with main line drivers, unit control and signal box
- You’ll keep our trains in a safe condition to allow colleagues to carry out their duties
- Ensuring you keep people safe; you will be trained in and follow all the relevant health and safety requirements.
About You:
You do not need to have a qualification in Engineering, as we will teach you what you need to know, but having some basic technical skills covering mechanical, electrical, plumbing & vehicle building skills would be beneficial. You also must have held a full driving licence for a minimum of 2 years.
You’ll also need to have excellent team working abilities and communication skills, as this is crucial in this role to ensure all work is completed and nothing is missed.
We’re also looking for the following:
- Experience in following instructions/rules and regulations, to ensure all maintenance is carried out in a safe manner
- The ability to stay calm and to think on your feet, in sometimes challenging situations
- Someone who is dedicated and confident about talking to and building relationships with all sorts of people to ensure smooth running.
