Key Purpose
The Team Leader is part of the Nursing Team and provides the highest standard of care for each resident in a warm, caring and professional atmosphere. The Team Leader must also ensure that the nursing services for all residents is professional, effective and makes optimum use of the resources available. The Team Leader is responsible to the Nurse in Charge for the management of the staff team which he/she is leading and to participate in the caring tasks of the team. This is a waking nights role.
The Team Leader must uphold and enhance the reputation of the Home.
Key Responsibilities
1. Care Responsibilities
a. To promote the philosophy of person-centred care which includes privacy, dignity, independence, choice, rights and fulfilment for all residents, within a policy of managed risk taking;
b. Promote resident well-being by monitoring and re-evaluation of care needs in partnership with the resident, any significant others the resident may wish to have involved. Provide care with sensitivity in sickness, death and bereavement;
c. Enable residents to receive as far as possible the range of services available in the community and to participate in social and other activities which will assist them to enjoy the lifestyle of their choice;
d. Share in caring tasks with other team members and contribute to assessment, reviews and case conferences;
e. Assist and support relatives and carers;
f. Participate in the planning, implementation and management of new developments to meet the changing needs of elderly people in co-operation with other professional workers.
2. Management Responsibilities
a. Manage the skill mix of staff ensuring these are used to the best effect for the physical, social and emotional care of residents and effective running of the establishment. Allocating staff on each shift, including who will be responsible for completing residents’ charts. Advise the Nurse in charge/Registered Manager on a weekly basis the staffing levels, ensuring that our own staff are requested to cover any outstanding duties prior to making a request for agency staff, bearing in mind the skill mix of the team;
b. Overseeing and arranging annual leave for the team whilst keeping within the regulation(s) of Rusthall Lodge. Filing approved annual leave forms in conjunction with the Administration team who will enter the details onto CoolCare 4;
c. Ensure that team members understand and endorse the aims and objectives of the home by guidance, instruction and practice;
d. Responsibility for clear lines of communication ensuring staff are fully conversant with their duties – to include holding regular team meetings, promotion of an effective supervision system of staff members;
e. Identify training needs. Communicating with the Director or Care and the Training Officer and participating in the planning and implementation of in-house training, including induction training for new staff;
f. Take appropriate action to remedy any unsatisfactory staff performance, recording any
g. significant action;
h. Understand contents the Business Continuity Plan and fire procedures in the Home. Support the Manager and the designated Fire Officer in ensuring that regular fire drills and training are carried out and recorded;
i. Understand the employer/employee requirements of Health and Safety legislation and support the Manager and the designated Health and Safety Officer in ensuring compliance and training updates. Ensure own practice is updated in Mandatory Training;
j. Understand Infection Control Policy and support the Manager and the designated Infection Control Link Person in ensuring compliance;
k. Understand the requirements of good housekeeping and report concerns through the appropriate channels;
l. Support staff in the provision of good home nursing procedures including management of continence and sensitive and appropriate support of incontinence, in line with Trust policy;
m. Refer concerns and difficulties to the Nurse in Charge as appropriate. Brief more generally as requested;
n. Promote good relations with local community and support volunteers, relatives and carers;
o. Report any damage to building and equipment, maintaining health and safety;
p. Any other duties within the scope of the post.
3. General Requirements
a. Always maintain confidentiality in line with the General Data Protection Regulation ((EU) 2016/679) (GDPR), especially regarding information relating to residents and their treatment;
b. Develop and maintain good working relationships with all staff within Rusthall Lodge;
c. Advise the Nurse in charge of any required purchase of necessary equipment;
d. Ensure that faulty equipment is not used by anyone, and that the Nurse in charge is aware of the problem;
e. Participate in training programmes relating to your own professional requirements;
f. Attend mandatory training as required;
g. Attend all other meetings when required;
h. Keep updated and comply with all Rusthall Lodge policies and procedures;
i. Comply with Rusthall Lodge Policies and Procedures;
j. Take care of own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by your actions at work, which may include other staff members, residents and visitors;
k. Co-operate with the management team and co-workers to help everyone meet their legal requirements related to health and safety. Raise with the management team any specific queries or concerns relating to health and safety and support them to address health and safety issues;
l. Undertake such other tasks and duties as may be required.
