As a team leader you will be managing a team of strategic planners who assess planning applications which are referred to the Mayor and work in collaboration with boroughs to deliver the ambitions of the London Plan and the Mayor’s objectives. You will be politically astute and have a proven track record in London and be confident in dealing with complex strategic planning issues and competing priorities and be part of shaping a high quality planning service.

Principal Accountabilities

  • To deputise for the Deputy Head of Development Management on a rota basis in his/her absence and at other times, as requested by the Deputy Head of Development Management, by being responsible for all aspects of the team’s work and for representing the team in meetings, or contacts with, senior management of any department and Deputy Mayors.
  • To assist the Deputy Head of Development Management on a regular basis in the management of the overall workload, staffing, financial and other resources of the team and to ensure the most effective use of these resources consistent with GLA policy, priorities and decisions on levels of service to be provided, and relevant legislation; and, in particular, to
  • Prioritise, programme and ensure performance targets are met
  • Allocate, supervise, and monitor the progress of, work and achievement of service and performance targets; achieving satisfactory quality and efficiency
  • Prepare or obtain any necessary financial estimates and exercise budgetary control
  • Undertake recruitment, training needs assessment, training having due regard to the need to provide for career development and equal opportunities
  • Ensure that all staff management and performance processes are carried out efficiently
  • Ensure that there is a clearly understood scheme of delegation and lead responsibilities in the team
  • Supervise the work and performance of the other officers in the team; and check, advise on and where necessary edit reports, calculations and correspondence drafted by all officers within the team

This role is based at London Fire Brigade’s Head Office (Union Street SE1 0LL)

GLA staff are hybrid working up to 3 days a week in our offices and remotely depending on their role. As part of this, you will need to split your time between home working and coming into the office.
