Job description

The Grange Junior School in Hartford is seeking to recruit a Teaching & Learning Assistant (initially working in KS1/Year 2) from 29th August 2023 on a permanent contract working term time only from 8:30am - 4:00pm, 32.5 hours per week.

Our team of Teaching and Learning Assistants ensure the provision of a high quality, professional educational service to parents. They do this through working in close collaboration with their link teacher(s) and Head of Learning Support, to put in place challenging yet supportive learning interventions for children, by providing personalised pastoral care and by developing confidence in our young people such that they develop the knowledge, understanding, passions and personal effectiveness which act as the finest grounding for lifelong learning.

The TLA is responsible for supporting the teaching staff and Head of Learning Support to enable all children to become more independent learners, help to raise their standards of achievement in

accordance with the aims and policies of the school. TLAs from both Key Stages meet regularly with the Head of Learning Support to review any issues arising, share relevant information and undertake any training as required.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute and input into planning meetings and be actively involved in the planning and evaluation of learning activities for individuals and groups of children to enable teaching staff to make informed decisions when developing their plans.
  • Help teachers (including Head of Learning Support) as directed or requested by them in the delivery of learning support programmes and undertake predetermined activities with individuals or small groups of children so that their intellectual and social development is nurtured.
  • Supervise the activities of individuals or groups of children both in and out of the classroom (including educational visits) to ensure their safety and facilitate their physical and emotional development in accordance with the school's behaviour management policy.
  • Raise the awareness to teaching staff of any pressures on children which may result in behaviour problems.
  • Monitor individual children’s progress and report these to the teaching staff to inform decisions taken including, but not limited to, the Monitoring List, Learning Support Register, Behaviour Plans and Personal Care Programmes for a pupil.
  • Raise the awareness of teaching staff to strengths and difficulties of individual children.
  • Provide support for teachers in developing effective approaches to managing behaviour.
  • Support children who may need to learn remotely, using technology effectively to support this process.
  • Liaise with parents and carers in conjunction with the teaching staff to ensure effective communication concerning the children's well-being.
  • Record pupil information as specified by the teaching staff to ensure the school’s information systems are maintained.
  • Attend to the personal and physical needs of children so that their well-being is maintained including, and not limited to, any Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan, dietary and medical information.
  • Prepare and maintain learning resources and ensure that the classroom is such that the needs of the lesson plans are met in a safe learning environment, which complies with relevant health and safety requirements.
  • Display and present the children's work, under the direction of teaching staff so that it enhances the school environment and celebrates achievement.
  • Liaise with other professionals, such as speech therapists and educational psychologists following recommendations as necessary.
  • Participate in staff meetings, parents’ evenings, staff training development work and staff reviews as required.
  • Deliver structured interventions as required by the learning support register and/or monitoring system.
  • Review and develop own professional practice.
  • Complete any tasks and duties as reasonably requested by the Head or appropriate member of the school’s Leadership Team.
