Job description
- The TB nurse specialist will be a member of the TB service providing support to patients and their families
- To deliver expert patient-centred nursing care and act as a case manager for patients being treated for Tuberculosis (TB)/Non TB Mycobacterial Infection (NTM) and Latent TB Infection (LTBI)
- To autonomously run nurse led TB contact clinics and TB/NTM patient clinics
- Facilitate accurate healthcare information, health advice and appropriate support and referral.
- To participate in developing the strategic direction of the TB service in line with national and local targets working closely with the Band 7 TB Nurses.

No PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE IN THE FIELD OF TB REQUIRED, as you will receive on the job training.
The post-holder will work as part of the Essex TB nursing team, based primarily in one hospital; either Basildon, Southend, Broomfield (Chelmsford) or Princess Alexandra Hospital (Harlow).
The role will include, nurse led clinics, home visits, managing a varied caseload (both adults and children) and involve hybrid working.
You will be working closely with other agencies, providing education, and raising awareness of TB. You will help to provide a flexible and responsive high quality TB service facilitating effective patient management and protection to the general public.
The post is full time excluding Bank Holidays and weekends.

What is Staff Bank?

To act as a case manager for own caseload, with support of the Band 7 nurse specialist and reference to NICE guidelines (2016), co-ordinating and providing care within the community (including home visits or seeing patients in other agreed locations)
1.2 To support patients in adhering to treatment regimens by assessing and developing strategies to overcome barriers to adherence.
1.3 Provide screening/immunisation clinics for TB contacts and new entrants, children and adults.
1.4 Work under patient specific/group directions to perform and assess Mantoux testing, interpreting results appropriately, administering BCG as required or sending for further investigation in accordance with NICE TB guidance (2016)
1.5 Maintain effective communications with the patients, families and all members of the multidisciplinary team members to ensure that appropriate information is shared and the patient’s needs are meet
1.6 Support, organise and were appropriate, manage Directly Observed Therapy Short course (DOTS/VOTS) within the community for all sources of Tubercle infection to prevent multi-drug resistant (MDR) strains of TB.
1.7 Carry out contract tracing (statutory responsibility) thus preventing the spread of the disease.
1.8 Respond to local policies on screening of patients identified as “at risk”.
1.9 Support, reassure and educate the infected person and family/contacts.
1.10 Develop and maintain a sound knowledge base and practise relevant to the TB service
1.11 Facilitates a multi-professional approach to the management of TB/NMTB/LTBI patients across South, Mid and West Essex.
1.12 Support and help implement changes in clinical practice based on current initiatives and research and also support a ‘leading edge’ service based on local and national initiatives.
1.13 By clarifying healthcare needs, to act as an advocate for the client group with the application of ethnic, legal and professional knowledge and skills.
