Job description

Applications are invited for a highly motivated Synthetic Organic Chemist to work under the supervision of Dr Sam Thompson on a research project funded by the EPSRC. The duration of the position is two years subject to satisfactory performance during a probationary period. MISSION (https://gow.epsrc.ukri.org/NGBOViewGrant.aspx?GrantRef=EP/V047663/1) is a major collaborative programme between the Universities of Southampton, York, Sheffield, University Hospital Southampton, and the National Oceanography Centre. The vision of MISSION is to play a leading role in driving innovation in photonic sensing by addressing challenges in detection of therapeutic drugs, cancer, and greenhouse gases. The appointee will bring synthetic chemistry expertise to the team, developing and delivering synthetic receptors for analytes of interest via multi-step synthesis, according to project deadlines.

Extensive experience in multi-step synthetic organic chemistry and characterisation of complex organic molecules is essential, and the successful candidate should hold a degree in chemistry, or closely related field. A PhD would be desirable but is not essential for this role. An excellent work ethic, commitment to achieve the project aims and ability to work as part as a collaborative team will be essential. You will also play a key role in the general running of the laboratory, including working with undergraduate and postgraduate students as required. Experience of the following are desirable but not essential: (i) HPLC analysis and purification of organic compounds, (ii) NMR techniques and single-crystal x-ray crystallography for elucidating solution- and solid-state conformation, especially of host-guest complexes, (iii) supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate researchers in a laboratory environment. The development of written/oral communication skills will be actively encouraged through funding to present at meetings and conferences.

The group is based in the modern synthetic chemistry laboratories in the School of Chemistry on the Highfield Campus, which benefits from first class support for synthetic chemistry, with exceptional MS, NMR, and x-ray facilities, each supported by dedicated specialist staff. Your working hours will be somewhat flexible, within the laboratory core hours of 08:30 – 18:00. We are an equal opportunities employer and encourage applications from all suitably qualified persons regardless of their race, sex, disability, religion/belief, sexual orientation, or age.

This position is available immediately, but it advertised with an indicative start date of 1st October 2023. Informal enquiries should be made to Dr Sam Thompson ([email protected]), School of Chemistry, or Professor Goran Mashanovich ([email protected]), or Professor Graham Reed ([email protected]), Optoelectronic Research Centre, University of Southampton.

The application deadline is midnight on the closing date stated above. If you need assistance, call Recruitment on +44 (0) 23 8059 2750, or email [email protected]. Quote the advert reference on all correspondence.
