The Royal Borough of Greenwich is looking to recruit a highly motivated and proactive Sustainability Officer as part of our Housing Energy and Sustainability team.

The Royal Borough of Greenwich declared a climate emergency in 2019 and we have set an ambitious target to reach to net zero carbon by 2030. Within the Directorate of Housing and Safer Communities, we recognise that in order to meet this target it is crucial that we dramatically improve the energy efficiency of our homes. We are passionate about ensuring that homes in the Borough are comfortable, energy efficient, low-carbon, and safe.

Our team is responsible for developing and delivering a housing decarbonisation strategy. The new Sustainability Officer will support the team both strategically and in project delivery. This is an exciting time to join the team, as we have a number of new retrofit and energy efficiency projects underway, including:

  • a £21M project part funded by the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero to retrofit 665 social housing homes across the borough
  • the installation of large water- and air-source heat pumps as part of communal heating schemes/heat networks
  • innovative technology pilots testing the impact of nudges from smart home energy monitors, and solar energy sharing between residents of tower blocks

In this exciting new role, you will:

  • Assist with analysis of building stock energy efficiency data and make recommendations for the housing decarbonisation strategy, and for defining new retrofit projects
  • Assist with the delivery and project management of retrofit projects
  • Monitor performance of our communal heat networks, and define and manage projects for installation of low-carbon heating technologies such as air-source heat pumps
  • Build relationships with teams across the council to help integrate energy efficiency and sustainability principles into housing repair and improvement works
  • Work with the Council’s Innovation Company to implement pilots for new technologies (current projects include solar sharing and sensor installation)
  • Assist with the preparation of bids for funding for energy efficiency/sustainability projects
  • Work alongside our Resident Engagement team to implement engagement strategies on energy efficiency projects
  • Build relationships across the council and with community groups to assist with projects empowering residents in the private sector to improve the energy efficiency of their home

What you’ll need:

  • Project management skills, with ability to manage multiple work-streams, clients and budgets
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Data analysis and interpretation skills
  • To be educated to degree level or equivalent through relevant training/experience in areas such as sustainability, construction, housing, engineering and technology, architecture, project management, economics or other relevant field
  • An understanding of the principles of housing retrofit and low-carbon technologies
  • Understanding of the design and construction process in the built environment
  • Ability to build effective, positive relationships with stakeholders (internal and external) including Members and be an active member of different teams
