Job Title: Sustainability Assistant Manager (Band 2)
Reporting to: SHE Sustainability Manager
Salary: £37,000-42,000 per annum dependent on skills, knowledge, and experience
Location: London (Hybrid)
Duration: Permanent (Full-time; flexible working arrangements considered)
Job Purpose
This is an exciting opportunity for an action-oriented professional with a passion for sustainability to help TfL deliver on our vision to be the strong, green heartbeat for London.
We are looking for an Assistant Sustainability Manager to assist in the coordination of work to embed sustainability across the organisation, to drive clear and transparent governance through rapid change in this industry, and to help identify and address gaps in the organisation’s capabilities.
The role holder needs to have good organisational awareness, be a strategic thinker, great communicator and good at quickly building positive relationships with influencers and decision makers around the business. They need to be well organised, have excellent people skills and good project and programme management skills to maintain focus on coordination of the changing landscape of TfL governance, structure and delivery in relation to the environment and sustainability agenda.
This role sits within the Safety, Health and Environment team at TfL, and reports to the Sustainability Manager.
Key accountabilities
- Championing a culture change mindset with pragmatism, creativity, and positivity. Support and challenge the business to deliver activities in the TfL Sustainability Strategy and TfL Corporate Environment Plan and beyond.
- Pro-actively and collaboratively working with colleagues internally and externally, to identify opportunities, build detailed plans and drive delivery.
- Identifying, monitor and report on day-to-day coordination and tracking of activities and progress to senior managers to ensure continued progress. Ensure all relevant colleagues are clear on project deliverables, deadlines, and quality criteria.
- Escalating unresolved issues, risks and dependencies at the earliest possible opportunity; offers solutions and options of how these issues can be addressed.
- Engaging in training and knowledge building activities with colleagues to enhance knowledge and culture change across the organisation.
- Pro-actively assess resource and capabilities gaps and work collaboratively to develop strategies and opportunities to build those capabilities within teams to accelerate the sustainability agenda.
- The job holder will ensure early industry and other external intelligence is shared across the business and used to inform our work.
- Be a role model for diversity and inclusion and an advocate for safety, health and environment in everything you do.
Knowledge
- Knowledge of the legislative and political landscape and the governance structures in London. (essential)
- A basic understanding of climate change and nature loss and the challenges cities and the UK face as they decarbonise and seek to adapt to a changing climate, with a keen interest to continually learn as these disciplines evolve. (essential)
- Recognised project management qualification and/or evidence of strong experience in project management. (desirable)
