Surgical First Assistant/Senior Theatre Practitioner

Our main adult theatre is a busy and dynamic environment, setting the benchmark for clinical excellence.

We have 5 operating suites catering for Cardiac, Orthopaedics, ENT and Ophthalmic, Plastics, General/Vascular, Urology and Gynaecology. We work with surgeons who are the best in their specialities carrying out simple to the more complex surgeries.

Role Overview

To be responsible for providing skilled clinical and technical assistance as a member of the operating theatre team, taking on the role of Surgical First Assistant/Senior Theatre practitioner role.

You will provide continuous competent and dedicated assistance under the direct supervision of the operating surgeon throughout the procedure and be responsible for the management of the equipment, instrumentation, and standards within the designated specialty and the role.

To act as a scrub nurse when SFA role if not required.

What you’ll do:

  • Assist in the positioning and preparation of a patient as directed by the surgical team and ensure that any specimens are correctly labelled and dispatched to the laboratory.
  • Participate in departmental audit activities.
  • Control cross infection by observing departmental policy regarding dress, the maintenance of a clean working environment, decontamination and sterilisation procedures and asepsis.
  • Participate in induction and orientation programs for new staff to ensure a welcoming environment.
  • Assist the department in the Personal Development Plans of various members of staff.
  • Provide assistance in clinical/ operative procedures, both anaesthetics and surgery.
  • Assist in the management of haemostasis.
  • Identify key issues related to tissue handling and its impact on tissue viability and healing.
  • Demonstrate the skilled ability and safe practice of:
  • Retracting tissue and organs
  • Handling tissues and organs
  • Removing haemostats
  • Using suction equipment
  • Indirect application of diathermy
  • Application of dressings/stoma appliances
  • Camera holding
  • Skin preparation prior to surgery
  • Draping the patient prior to surgery
  • Performing superficial skin closure and application of skin sutures and staples as directed by surgeon.
  • Handling instruments
  • Provide immediate post-operative care as per local policy.
  • Provide initial emergency care as required as per local policy.
  • Take charge of the clinical area in the absence of an advanced practitioner ensuring patient, visitors, and staff safety.
  • Ensure the accurate collection of data in relation to theatre activity.
  • To undertake such duties as may be required from time to time as are consistent with the responsibilities of the grade and the needs of the service.
