We are looking for a Support Worker to join our Supported Living Service situated near the beautiful Saltwell Park area of Gateshead on a permanent, part time basis (16 hours a week).
About our Service
The 16 hrs hours will be mainly worked during the day to support service users with leisure activities, walks and outings.

Each day will be different, we are looking for a person who will enjoy one to one time with the client doing an activity of their choice. The client may choose to go for a lovely walk in the park, go to a disco or go to an art and craft session. At Mencap we encourage our staff to support clients to understand the world around them; promote positive relationships; and share ideas of activities in the local area the client may like to pursue.

You should be friendly, sociable, with a pinch of patience and a bucketful of fun to be a Support Worker at Mencap!

Timekeeping is essential, as you will make plans with the client you should arrive on time and keep to the shift hours.

What does a Support Worker do?



As a Support Worker you will be expected to provide an outstanding level of support that will help to ensure the people we support live a more comfortable, dignified, liberated and happy life. You will have excellent communication skills and be a naturally caring and patient personality. Typical responsibilities may include:

  • Supporting people to live independently – budget management, paying bills, housework, organising appointments and cooking delicious healthy meals.
  • Excellent communication skills and Relationship building – supporting the people we support to understand the world around them and promoting positive relationships.
  • Community & Social Inclusion - supporting individuals to access and participate in their local community and social events to promote life skills and individuality.
  • Personal care - helping people to get ready for the day. This may include prompting the people we support to take their medication and assisting with bathing, showering and using the bathroom. Not all Support Worker roles include high levels of personal care.
