Support Worker
1. To work with a child with disabilities, initially and primarily at home.
2. To be responsible to the client via the Case Manager.
3. To provide assistance and support as directed by the Case Manager, and adhere to
JSP policies.
4. To help the client with his ability to communicate and to follow the guidelines of the
Speech and Language therapist.
5. To provide personal care as required, including care of PEG and PEG site.
6. If required to do so, to provide nutritional, blended meals for the client via his PEG
[following appropriate training], with the agreement of parents.
7. To be flexible in hours of work to satisfy the clients requirements.
8. To carry out domestic duties in the client’s house as appropriate, for example, changing client’s sheets/washing and drying of clothes and keeping his room clean and tidy.
12. To undertake training and supervision as agreed by the Case Manager.
13. To liaise closely with any other professionals as directed by the Case Manager.
14. To work within agreed care techniques and strategies documented in the care plan.
15. To work alongside the client’s therapists and assist with agreed rehabilitation
strategies and techniques.
16. To ensure client confidentiality in all matters relating to the client.
17. Any other appropriate and reasonable task in relation to the employment as agreed
with the client and Case Manager.

The following skills and aptitudes are essential when working with a person who has cerebral palsy:-
Essential
1. Communication – the ability to communicate with a client who is largely non -verbal,
and also in writing for shift recording purposes.
2. Patience –the ability to provide a calm and consistent approach.
3. Open mindedness – the ability to see things from other peoples’ perspectives and to
work in a respectful and adaptable way, within the family home.
4. Flexibility – the ability to work outside a routine when a situation demands it.
5. Teamwork – the ability to work effectively with a variety of people involved with the
client.
6. Conscientiousness – the ability to take pride in own work, which will include good
timekeeping and perseverance.
7. Awareness of risk – the ability to identify areas of risk and present ideas of how to
reduce that risk.
8. Self-motivation – the ability to remain motivated to provide support in spite of
difficult circumstances in order to maintain the level of care required.
9. Initiative – the ability to take a proactive role when required.
10. New learning – the ability to adapt to different situations.
11. A positive and reassuring approach, confident but not patronising to the client.
12. Literacy skills – ability to read and understand appropriate written material.
