We are looking for two people with an aptitude for practical tasks to join our Technical Support Team.
The Technical Support Team are based in the Major Hazards Group of HSE's Science Division. The group carries out laboratory and large (outdoor) scale scientific tests and experiments for the HSE. These tests can be in relation to investigating the cause of industrial accidents that have occurred across the UK, a specific research topic or helping support the safe development of new technologies. Much of this work is supporting the safe introduction of new fuel technologies, such as batteries or hydrogen for heat or transport.

You will be providing a range of support, enabling the delivery of this work. The role will suit people who are practical and like an element of variety, there are very few days exactly the same. Job description
Your role will focus on three main areas:
- Supporting scientists and engineers carry our experimental research at our Buxton site. This will involve the use of tools, plant and lifting equipment (training can be provided) and other practical tasks such as moving equipment around site, setting up/constructing rigs and equipment or dismantling after work has taken place.
- Collection of incident material from industrial accidents. This task will involve driving cars/vans to locations across the UK and retrieving evidence from duty holders sites, moving it to the Buxton laboratory for scientists/engineers to carry out forensic testing. This will involve overnight stays (approx. 2/3 times per month) and taking responsibility for maintaining the chain of evidence and keeping accurate records.
- General maintenance and upkeep of site facilities and equipment.
Whilst the role will have an engineering and logistics focus, the Technical Support Team’s work is diverse. The role will, therefore, involve contributing to other aspects of the team’s outputs. For example acting as a safety lookout when experiments are taking place or helping coordinate groups of visitors on site.
You will be using a range of equipment, tools, lifting equipment, driving commercial vehicles (vans) and getting involved with the upkeep of equipment, setting equipment up, helping deliver tests and dismantling once complete.
At times you will be working independently, or as part of a team and should be comfortable with both scenarios.
Person specification
You should be able to demonstrate:
A practical aptitude and an ability to use/learn to use a range of plant and lifting equipment- The ability to plan, organise and prioritise your work effectively.
- Good communication skills to allow you to interact professionally with your team and internal customers, using both verbal and written communication.
- Ability to use IT, including MS Office 365
- Ability to work well both as part of a team and independently
- A positive attitude towards personal and professional development
- A willingness to work in a range of environments including engineering workshops, outdoors and, at times, within an office environment.
Desirable experience and skills
- Use of hand and/or power tools
- Driving commercial vehicles
- Use of plant, lifting equipment or agricultural machinery - e.g. FLT, Tractor, Telehandler
Licences
Qualifications
Desirable – Engineering related qualifications at Level 2 or above. Examples may include GCSE/A Level/NVQ/BTEC in Engineering, Design and Technology or equivalent.
