If experiencing the work that goes into maintaining and improving our railways matters to you. You matter to us. During this placement, youll be based at one of our major hubs. Youll see what goes into keeping our railways running, and get hands on engineering experience from day one. This scheme is operated by a supportive team of former graduates, meaning youll be coached to develop your skills and abilities, as you contribute to some of Britains biggest rail infrastructure projects. Who you are matters
We look for logical thinkers, who arent afraid to take a creative approach to solving challenging problems. Resourceful and hardworking, youll be comfortable managing your own time to ensure the job gets done. As a natural communicator, youll be able to build relationships with colleagues, suppliers and customers alike. Youll also need a degree of flexibility and not mind traveling to attend training and development opportunities.
Over four placements, youll gain practical engineering experience at one of Britains largest railway operating centres. Expect to play a part in some of our most ambitious engineering projects, such as the Great Western mainline, the Great North Rail Project and Digital Railway.
Youll have opportunities to maintain bridges and structures, and even take responsibility for deciding which innovative building materials and techniques to use, to improve reliability and sustainability. Youll also help manage complicated inner-city assets, and establish inspection and maintenance requirements for embankments and cuttings that run through the countryside.

Youll be in your penultimate year at university, and on track to achieve at least a 2:2 in an Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE) accredited degree.

Our Drugs and Alcohol Standard is changing as of 16.01.2023. All prospective candidates who have not been offered a conditional role by 16.01.2023 will be required to undergo and pass a drugs and alcohol test. Your application will be rescinded if you record a positive test. All positive drugs and alcohol test results for prospective candidates will be securely held on Sentinel database and a 5 year suspension from applying for a safety critical role, a role which requires PTS certification or a Key Safety role on Network Rail Managed Infrastructure will be enforced.
