Brief Description

Finding the smartest approach matters

If experiencing the work that goes into maintaining and improving our railways matters to you. You matter to us. During this placement, you’ll be based at one of our major hubs. You’ll see what goes into keeping our railways running, and get hands on engineering experience from day one. This scheme is operated by a supportive team of former graduates, meaning you’ll be coached to develop your skills and abilities, as you contribute to some of Britain’s biggest rail infrastructure projects. With just a few placement opportunities available, if you think this is for you, don’t delay your application.

About the role (External)

Overview
The scheme runs for 10 weeks from June to August 2023.
This opportunity is based in York George Stephenson House

Who you are matters

We look for logical thinkers, who aren’t afraid to take a creative approach to solving challenging problems. Resourceful and hardworking, you’ll be comfortable managing your own time to ensure the job gets done. As a natural communicator, you’ll be able to build relationships with colleagues, suppliers and customers alike. You’ll also need a degree of flexibility and not mind traveling to attend training and development opportunities.

What you’ll be doing matters

Over four placements, you’ll gain practical engineering experience at one of Britain’s largest railway operating centres. Expect to play a part in some of our most ambitious engineering projects, such as the Great Western mainline, the Great North Rail Project and Digital Railway.

You’ll have opportunities to maintain bridges and structures, and even take responsibility for deciding which innovative building materials and techniques to use, to improve reliability and sustainability. You’ll also help manage complicated inner-city assets, and establish inspection and maintenance requirements for embankments and cuttings that run through the countryside.

What you’ll get out of it matters
We invest in our summer placement students, because we believe they hold the potential to be the future of our business. That means from day one you’ll receive strong mentoring from senior colleagues. Over the ten weeks, you’ll get a rounded experience of what it takes to be a civil engineer on our railways.

The opportunities it leads to matter
Do well and you’ll be considered for next year’s graduate scheme.

The entry requirements matter

You’ll be in your penultimate year at university, and on track to achieve at least a 2:2 in an Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE) accredited degree.

We matter to millions. You could too.

Salary: Band 7 - £17,000 per annum pro rata

Closing date: 4th May. - Late applications will not be accepted.

This is a fixed term opportunity starting on 19th June and ending 17th August

Drugs and Alcohol Standard:

Our Drugs and Alcohol Standard is changing as of 16.01.2023. All prospective candidates who have not been offered a conditional role by 16.01.2023 will be required to undergo and pass a drugs and alcohol test. Your application will be rescinded if you record a positive test. All positive drugs and alcohol test results for prospective candidates will be securely held on Sentinel database and a 5 year suspension from applying for a safety critical role, a role which requires PTS certification or a Key Safety role on Network Rail Managed Infrastructure will be enforced.
