Summer Internship - Conservation of Library and Archives' paper collections
Project title: Conservation of Library and Archives’ paper collections; Paper Conservator Intern
The internship offers a conservation student (or recent graduate) the opportunity to undertake a discrete paper-based conservation project and gain experience of the role within an institutional setting. Through on the-job training, they will examine, research, document and undertake conservation treatment, under supervision and guidance, assessing damaged objects and discussing treatment options in accordance with conservation theoretical and ethical principles.

Alongside undertaking remedial conservation, the intern will assist with wider conservation activities, providing a breadth of work experience and the opportunity to learn key skills, including:
- training in and gaining experience of preventative conservation, including pest identification, IPM and decontamination.
- collection surveys and/or rehousing by completing a mini-survey of a designated area of the collection, documenting condition and housing, suggesting improvements, and leading on and delivering object rehousing.
- learning about studio management, including COSHH regulations and health and safety legislation.
- undertaking engagement activities.
- formal learning opportunities, including ‘bitesize’ collections sessions to develop understanding of L&A collections and materials.
The intern will work in Kew’s conservation studios with professional conservators and have the opportunity to work with archive, library and illustration collections professionals.

The salary will be £19,582 per annum (pro rata).
