London Underground has the largest private electrical distribution network in the country requiring multi-disciplined technical staff to maintain the infrastructure. We have an opportunity in the field of substation maintenance for a Substation Tester.
You will be responsible for undertaking, servicing and first-line fault attendance and repair of all plant and equipment under the control of Power Delivery.
You will ensure that the assets are serviced in accordance with set specifications to meet safety and operational criteria in order to provide an efficient and continuous power supplies to the London Underground railway system.
You will also be responsible for the operation and switching of Power Delivery’s assets – locally and manually
Key Accountabilities
- Fault finding and first line fault repair of HV (22kv and 11kV) Switchgear, DC Traction Switchgear, LV Switchgear, Signal Contactors, Frequency Changers and Rotary Convertors, Battery Chargers and Battery Systems and Compressed Air Equipment
- Isolation and Earthing of Substation Plant and the issue and cancellation of associated Safety Documentation.
- Servicing (clean, inspect, calibration checks in accordance with WI and associated check sheets & report) of DC switchgear and frequency changers.
- Maintenance, fault finding and repair of substation/station batteries and associated charging equipment. Assembly of battery systems and connection of hospital sets.
- Undertake work on live AC and DC apparatus, conductors or equipment up to 1kV whilst conforming to Power Delivery Live Work Procedures.
- Assist Fitting Teams while on standby duties.
- Use meters and instruments (e.g. Multi-Meters, IR (Megger) Test Sets, HV Switchgear Profiler, DC Traction Meters, Battery Impedance Test Equipment, Ultra-tev Devices, IR Detectors and Humidity Meters) and record readings.
- Drive vehicles, clean them and carry out vehicle checks as required
- Operate communication / data transmission and display equipment.
- Operate mechanical aids and use portable equipment.
- Take substations/switch houses etc onto local/manual control.
- Undertake regular inspections of plant and site conditions; monitor and log plant instrumentation and record and report any defects/abnormalities.
- Ensure that the work of staff acting under your control is carried out in accordance with Safety instructions.
- Act as Site Person in Charge as required.
- Undertake domestic cleaning of substations, transformer rooms, switch houses etc.
- Prepare defect reports.
Skills, Knowledge & Experience
Skills
- Ability to interpret, understand and apply technical drawings (Essential)
- Hold a valid Full UK driving Licence (Essential)
Knowledge
- Recognised electrical apprenticeship (Essential)
- Electrical Engineering Qualification (City and Guilds/ONC) or equivalent (Essential)
- Proficient in the use of electrical test equipment used to determine the condition of plant & equipment (Essential)
- You will have sound theoretical electrical knowledge of dc batteries and chargers and supplies, standby power supplies and three phase ac electrical supplies, transformer principles, ac & dc switchgear operation, the fundamentals of circuit protection and earthing arrangements. (Desirable)
Experience
- Relevant electrical power experience (Fitting skills) (Essential)
- Experience working with electrical test equipment to determine the condition of plant or equipment. (Essential)
- Experience isolating HV plant (Desirable)
- Experience working to HV/LV rules (Desirable)

Shift Pattern: 2 weeks of days and 1 week of nights on rotation.
This is a safety critical role so you will need to get clearance from our Occupational Health team before you start.
