The Prison is the UK’s first purpose-built, new resettlement Prison. A one of a kind new generation category C new build Prison for the future, HMP Five Wells will be an integral part of the local community.


G4S Care & Rehabilitation Services (CaRS) already successfully manages 4 prisons, one secure training centre and a number of community contracts in England and Wales.



The philosophy of our prisons is rehabilitation, equipping our residents with the skills to re-integrate into mainstream society on release.



We seek to normalise prison conditions as far as possible to reflect life in the outside community. Our aim is to create an environment in which staff and residents feel safe.


We now have an exciting opportunity for a Substance Misuse Manager at HMP Five Wells.


Job Outline
To lead the Prison wide Substance misuse strategy and a team of practitioners that will support and encourage prisoners to overcome their substance misuse issues, through the delivery of set programmes, support groups and workshops.

Some of the key responsibilities to this role are:
  • Provide line Management, support and coaching to a number direct reportees, within the function
  • Manage all aspects of the Drug Strategy function, responding to any matters as they arise
  • Provide information, advice and support to Prisoners regarding substance abuse and treatment services and provide them with appropriate opportunities for recovery in line with current best practise.
  • Provide an assessment and referral service to Prisoners to link them directly with community based treatment and recovery or drug services within other prisons.
  • Liaise with agencies within the criminal justice field and drug treatment and rehabilitation services to support the development of treatment plans for those in need.
  • Prepare reports as required to support prisoner information for courts, parole and sentence planning boards.
  • Maintain complete records of work including ACCT documentation as required and compile statistics for management information as required to meet relevant standards.
  • Conduct one to one work with selected prisoners to meet individual needs of the prisoner
  • Work with staff to help educate and upskill their knowledge to support a wider prison approach to substance misuse support
  • Assist in maintaining a positive Health & Safety culture within the establishment.
  • Act in accordance with security and operational instructions to ensure the maintenance of security within the secure environment.



The Ideal Candidate:


Essential Skills
  • Excellent written and communication skills
  • Willingness to undertake the necessary training for accredited programmes

Desirable Skills
  • Knowledge of communication tools and techniques
  • Experience within a custodial setting

You must possess excellent communication skills both written and oral, alongside good negotiation and influencing skills with experience of working in a custodial setting.


It is essential that you have experience of working within a multifunctional and demanding environment. You will be a dynamic and engaging individual with a good sense of humour.
