Job description
Under the direction of the Associate Director, International Services, the International Student Adviser supports the achievement of Sheridan’s internationalization objectives, engages and advocates for international students and collaborates with Faculty offices and service areas within Sheridan. The three main responsibilities of the incumbent are: (1) to provide immigration advice and transition support to international students, (2) to issue appropriate documents to support international students’ needs for permit and visa applications, (3) to support the development of international experiential learning opportunities for students, and to ensure implementation Sheridan’s policies regarding study abroad.
What You’ll be Doing
Evaluating and assessing students’ immigration concerns to determine appropriate options, advice and solutions;
Advising international students on immigration regulations relating to study and work in Canada;
Assisting with study/work permits and visa applications; determining and confirming applicant eligibility;
Leading and participating in collaborative efforts to develop and deliver student support, transition programing and retention initiatives aimed at enhancing student success and quality of the student experience (i.e. pre-departure orientations, new student orientation, transition programming and immigration workshops);
Liaising with Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to verify student registration details and authenticate documents;
Coordinating the provision of international health insurance, including monitoring of insurance eligibility, communication about plans and benefits, and reporting to international health insurance provider;
Liaising with appropriate Sheridan specialist(s) to resolve individual student needs;
Creating and editing international web and mobile app content, and International Student Guide for distribution;
Composing and editing various communication campaigns in the form of mass emails, posters, flyers, pamphlets, etc.
Advising students on international experiential learning programs and other international travel;
Supporting faculty development and implementation of study abroad programming;
Developing and delivering outbound orientation sessions to mitigate risk and facilitate emergency response to students when travelling outside of Canada;
Advising, coordinating and supporting the registration, travel, transition of inbound exchange students to ensure a seamless, straightforward welcome, orientation and study experience for exchange students;
Performing other related duties as assigned.

You enjoy balancing many different tasks, staying organized and like to develop processes or systems to keep things running smoothly.
You have excellent written communication skills and experience writing high-engagement and error-free content to connect with the international student population through multiple channels (I.e. direct email campaigns/posters, handbooks, process flow documents).
The successful candidate will also meet the following qualifications:
4-year degree in Communications, Education or a related field;
3 years of relevant experience with an emphasis on providing immigration advice to international students, and supporting international students throughout their academic careers (equivalency to be considered);
Registration with (accreditation by) the Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council (ICCRC); Must be accredited as a Regulated International Student Immigration Adviser (RISIA) (preferred) or accredited as a Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant (RCIC);
Professional experience in cross-cultural communication;
Fluency in a second language, preferably Hindi, Punjabi, Mandarin, Arabic, Farsi, Russian, German, Vietnamese, Tagalog, Spanish or Portuguese, is highly desirable;
Experience composing and delivering information sessions, training programs and workshops to students/ staff/ faculty/ administration.
