Job summary
As Great Britain’s independent energy regulator, Ofgem works on behalf of energy consumers to ensure every household and business in Great Britain is treated fairly and can benefit from a cleaner, greener environment.
We currently have a position available for an adaptable, forward thinking strategist to guide transformational thinking within Ofgem and across the energy sector, ensuring we continue to protect consumer interests through an unprecedented period of energy volatility, whilst simultaneously enabling the net zero future.
Working within the Strategy and Decarbonisation Directorate, the role involves structuring and delivery of key projects to support strategic direction across Ofgem’s remit, collaborating on effective solutions, and delivering clear recommendations on key issues facing the sector. You will be tasked with managing crucial strategic initiatives, building organisational expertise and keeping abreast of sector developments.
This is an exciting opportunity to play a crucial role in shaping and implementing the response to the energy crisis and the transition to net zero.
You’ll be able to demonstrate a proven track record of being proactive and driving strategic projects, utilising evidence. Ideally, we’re looking for someone with a good understanding of the energy sector and the trajectory towards net zero, and strong analytical abilities.
A skilled collaborator and communicator, you’ll be able to build strong working relationships, and clearly and concisely connect with a range of senior internal and external stakeholders through quality presentations; written work and use of analysis. You will operate within a dynamic high-performing team environment, supported by and providing support to colleagues.
We’re looking for someone who can deliver simultaneous projects, making effective decisions and proactively managing priorities in a fast-paced environment. The role requires strategic and analytic thinking across complex ideas, with a drive to translate ideas into action.

Job description
The energy sector is going through an unprecedented period of change and transformation. In the near-term, with high and volatile gas prices, Ofgem must ensure that energy consumers are protected, and our energy system is reliable and resilient. Simultaneously, Ofgem must support the transformation to a net zero and data-enabled future.
Ofgem’s Strategy and Decarbonisation Directorate’s sits at the heart of Ofgem’s change and transformation, delivering decarbonisation while protecting the interests of energy consumers, and transforming Ofgem into an even more strategic, dynamic and impactful organisation.
Working closely with Ofgem’s leadership, regulatory and functional teams, we collaborate with government departments and a wide range of external stakeholders to ensure Ofgem’s work has maximum impact, and is informed by the best ideas and evidence.
We are seeking up to two high-calibre colleagues to join the Directorate as Senior Strategists, with responsibility for developing and running priority strategic projects, while contributing to the strategy expertise of the Strategy & Decarbonisation team.
Attitude and aptitude are just as important to us as a relevant technical background. Are you creative, persuasive, proactive and focused? Would you like to play a crucial part in shaping and delivering the UK’s energy crisis response and journey to net zero?
The successful candidates will have proven expertise in shaping and delivering strategic projects or workstreams, including developing compelling, evidence-based recommendations and working proactively and at pace to turn them into action. They will be skilled collaborators and strong communicators.
Person specification
The essential criteria for this role is:
- Communications: Strong ability to communicate effectively to a range of internal and external audiences, both in writing and in presentations, and to convey complex issues clearly and concisely. (LEAD)
- Experience working in a fast-paced environment and proactively delivering multiple, concurrent priorities and projects (LEAD)
- Strategic thinking: Ability to think strategically and creatively to develop complex ideas that translate into deliverable strategies, and an ability to understand own and work of the team within a wider, organisational context.
- Analysis and evidence: Strong ability to analyse quantitative and qualitative information, identify issues, synthesise diverse sources and intelligence and develop options and recommendations on a wide range of issues.
- Stakeholder engagement: a track record of building collaborative working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, engaging influencing skills to deliver through others
The desirable criteria for this role is:
- Teamwork: A positive ‘can-do’ attitude. An ability to work effectively as part of a team, responding flexibly and supportively to challenges as they arise, and taking proactive steps to promote a sustainable, high-performing team environment.
