Strain Improvement Scientist – 12 Month contract

We have a new opportunity for a Strain Improvement Scientist to join our team at GSK Worthing on a 12 month contract. The Strain Improvement Scientist is responsible for carrying out microbiological screening activities associated with all projects within the Bio Process Science (BPS) Department at GSK, Worthing. This primarily involves a programme of work to identify a strain of Streptomyces clavuligerus with improved productivity.

In this role you will

  • Participate in high throughput screening programme ensuring all activities are performed according to the schedule.

  • Identify areas for improvement in screening programme, conduct experiments to verify improvements and incorporate them into the screen.

  • Identify alternative strategies for identifying an improved mutant. e.g. rational screening and align these with the high throughput screening programme.

  • Identify new technologies to improve efficiency of the screen, liaise with suppliers, establish cost benefits and implement where appropriate.

  • Ensure all data is recorded in appropriate format. Analyse data using appropriate statistical software and use results to improve the screening programme.

  • Maintain stocks of improved strains and liaise with Fermentation Development team regarding further productivity testing.

  • Interact and liaise with other BPS teams to support delivery of BPS objectives

  • Adhere to and help maintain the highest levels of Safety and GLP across the department.

  • Ensure facilities and equipment are maintained to an appropriate standard and raise issues as necessary.

  • Excellent communication skills at all levels, both written and verbal.

  • Able to use problem solving and continuous improvement techniques

  • Understanding of statistics desirable.
