“I’m going to be part of a very rare trade.”
Diageo apprentices have the best of all worlds. Our on-site, hands-on, fast-learning programmes are perfect for people who are curious and have a willingness to learn. If you want to gain an industry recognised qualification that will set you up for a career to be proud of, you’re in the right place.
Who are we?
Diageo is one of the world’s leading producers of premium drinks. We have an outstanding collection of over 200 brands, old and new, large and small, global and local – that are enjoyed in more than 180 countries around the world. Our Cooperage in Alloa is an innovative facility that blends pioneering technology with the skill and craft of our Coopers.
How does the programme work?
The barrels that are used to mature our whisky are key ingredient when producing some of our most iconic brands. As a cooper you will step into the very heart of whisky production in Scotland.
‘Our Cooper Apprenticeship is a 4 year, work based, assessed programme. You will spend 3 years learning the history of coopering and developing the skills and techniques of the physical craft of the trade before moving into our pioneering mechanical cooperage in your 4th year. Our apprenticeship programme is accredited by the Cooperage Federation and you will be required to pass a Trade Test in the final of your apprenticeship to demonstrate competency which will assess your capability and craft.
What are the rewards?
The First Year apprentice salary is decided by the
Real Living Wage
which means we offer very competitive starting salaries for our apprenticeships along with an industry leading benefits package (Bonus, pension and access to share schemes all from day one).
With everything you can learn here, and the long-term opportunities we have to offer, the Diageo Spirit Operator apprenticeship could just be the best decision you’ve ever made
What are the Career Paths after the programme?
As a Cooper, you will be part of a unique trade, and can become an expert at this traditional craft in our pioneering mechanical cooperage.
Who are we looking for?
Academically, we’re looking for three Nat 5’s – including Maths, English and one technical or science subject. Please note that we will only be able to accept applications from people who have already achieved these grades.
We would love you to have an aptitude for working in a mechanical and woodworking environment.
You’ll need to be a curious, tenacious problem-solver, who’s proud of getting a great job done, and someone who shows integrity, respect for others and, above all, a passion for learning something new every day.
We encourage anybody who is interested in this programme to apply, we welcome all backgrounds, abilities, religions, gender identities, sexualities, and ethnicities.
We know that for our business to thrive and for Diageo to realize its ambition, we depend on having diverse talent with a range of backgrounds, skills and capabilities in each of the 180 countries in which we operate and to reflect our broad consumer base.
We view diversity as one of the key enablers that helps our business to grow and our values, purpose and standards set the conditions for us to respect the unique contribution each person brings.
