Job Title: Kindergarten Assistant
Position Type: Part time
Hours Up to 24 hrs per week
(over Mon/Tue/Wed/Thur between 9am and 3pm, plus meetings/festivals)
Rate of Pay: National Living Wage
Contract: Short term (to be renewed)
Trial Period: One half term (6 weeks)
Start Date: TBC
Purpose of Role
- To support the Kindergarten Teacher in all aspects of the day to day running of the kindergarten, as required.
- To provide an appropriate role model for the children in accordance with the Steiner Waldorf philosophy of education, and guided by the Kindergarten Teacher.
- To supervise the children both inside and outside, and ensure the safety and wellbeing of the children at all times.
- To be in sole charge of the children at the setting for short periods of time.
- To be in sole charge of the children at the setting in an emergency situation for a maximum of 2 hours.
Main Duties
- To take responsibility for the preparation of the daily snack.
- To supervise the children during creative play time, when appropriate.
- To assist children in the daily art or craft activity, when required.
- To assist the children with toileting, including changing nappies when required.
- To assist the children with washing hands when required.
- To assist the children with getting ready to go outside/come inside.
- To provide an appropriate role model for the children.
- To clear the table, sweep the floor and wash up after snack.
- To prepare the room for story time.
- To clean the sink and toilet area as and when required.
- To keep the kitchen area clean and tidy.
- To read and adhere to the policies, procedures and codes of conduct of the setting.
- To observe, monitor and report on the progress of each of the children, as and when required.
- To work with the Kindergarten Teacher to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the children at all times.
- To soothe and comfort injured children in line with the policies and procedures of the setting.
- To administer first aid/medical care, when appropriate, in line with parental/guardian consent and the policies and procedures of the setting.
- To ensure all visitors to the setting are duly authorised.
- To provide parents/guardians with information about the children to the extent authorised by the Kindergarten Teacher and in line with the policies and procedures of the setting.
- To attend a weekly staff meeting on a Thursday afternoon
- To prepare and attend festivals outside of normal hours, as required
- To carry out any other duties commensurate with the nature and level of the post that are required in order to deliver the job’s key responsibilities.
Minimum Requirements
- Level 2 Early Years qualification
- DBS Certificate (either existing or must be applied for prior to employment)
- Paediatric First Aid Certificate (either existing or must be applied for prior to employment)
- Introduction to Safeguarding Certificate (either existing or must be applied for prior to employment)
- A commitment to developing an understanding of child development from a Steiner Waldorf perspective.
- A commitment to developing an understanding of the Steiner Waldorf approach to early years education.
- A commitment to developing knowledge and experience of working with the EYFS.
- A commitment to developing a knowledge and understanding of safeguarding and child protection.
- A commitment to working with anti-discriminatory practice in all areas of work.
- A willingness to join in with all domestic and creative activities, including singing.
- A genuine desire to develop an understanding of the nature of children from a Steiner Waldorf perspective, and to support their healthy development in line with the Steiner Waldorf ethos.
Desirable Skills and Attributes
- Knowledge of child observation and assessment as outlined in the EYFS.
- Effective communication skills with both adults and children.
- A commitment to working in an open, honest and collaborative way with the Kindergarten Teacher, including asking for support when required.
- The ability to follow instructions whilst also being flexible and able to adapt to the situation.
- Time management and organisational skills.
- A calm and patient disposition.
- Some ability in handwork (simple sewing, craft etc.)
