All the details are in the job description, but in summary you will have a board and varied role as an Ophthalmic Staff Nurse. You’ll always be busy, but the work is interesting and rewarding and every day goes quickly! You’ll work closely with all disciplines of staff within the ophthalmic team to deliver the highest levels of nursing care to a range of patients’ within the ophthalmic out-patient department.

Once competency is obtained it will be necessary to undertake the following to support clinical activity:

  • Instillation of eye drops
  • A range of visual acuity testing
  • Emergency triage of ophthalmic patients
  • Assist in intravitreal treatment clinics / minor operations
  • Pre-assessment of cataract patients, which includes the ability to perform general health assessments.
  • Slit lamp examination / Applanation Tonometry
  • Biometry (Contact & non- contact methods)
  • Focimetry
  • Auto refraction
  • IV Cannulation and drug administration
  • Undertake the consent process for a range of Ophthalmic Procedures
  • Takes charge of the department when required providing co-ordination, organisation and proficiency in the efficient running of the clinics. Deputising for Ophthalmic Charge Nurse and colleagues.
Core working hours are Mon-Fri 8:00 to 17:30, Working a rotation of the weekly evening clinic until 19:30 and Saturdays 8:00 to 14:00, we currently do not work Sundays or Bank holidays, however if the need arises then we will be required to work.

Chesterfield Royal Hospital is located in Calow, Chesterfield, which is situated on a green field site on the edge of the Peak District National Park. It is home to the Crooked Spire and is also close to Sheffield, Derby and Nottingham, thus offering numerous choices for recreational activities and lifestyles.

Chesterfield Royal Hospital was officially opened by the queen in 1985 and since then it has continued to expand and modernise, currently holding approximately 550 beds. We provide acute in-patient and out-patient care for Chesterfield and the surrounding rural area of North Derbyshire, serving a population of approximately 350,000 people.

We are currently rated GOOD by the CQC.
