An exciting opportunity has become available for a BAND 5 staff nurse role within the busy and dynamic HIV Outpatients to work with an experienced MDT team delivering care to those living with HIV in Brighton and Hove. The team are imminently moving into the brand new hospital building on the RSCH site with access to state of the art clinical environments and equipment.

The Lawson unit provides a range of outpatient care to a diverse group of patients. The nursing team provide routine blood monitoring, health promotion and psychosocial support to our patients. We provide a range of specialist clinics for people living with HIV including, women, older people and people experiencing memory issues. Nurses are regularly involved in research and audit projects and supported to present at and attend conferences.

We have a strong multidisciplinary team which enables us to provide the best care possible. We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic person to join our friendly and dynamic team. Previous experience within HIV care is desirable but not essential and full training will be given. Excellent interpersonal communication skills, maintaining professional boundaries and leading by example are key expectations of this role.

1. The post holder will be responsible for delivering high quality nursing care that encompasses and responds to the health needs of people living with HIV attending the HIV outpatient clinic.
2. The post holder will provide evidence-based, holistic care to people living with HIV. This will include venepuncture, adherence support, side effect management, annual health checks and health promotion and sexual health discussion and screening. This will follow an in house and national training programme.
3. The post holder will work closely with the Nurse Team Leader and the Nurse team manager in delivering specialist nursing care for people living with HIV, incorporating Telephone and Face-2-Face follow up.
4. The post holder will need a flexible and positive attitude. They will need to be non-judgemental and able to work with a diverse patient and staff cohort.

Clinical:
After a programme of training the post holder will be required to provide holistic care and sexual health screening to people living with HIV. Being competent in the following:

  • Venepuncture.
  • Sexual history taking, baseline assessments and triage.
  • Interpretation of blood results, acting appropriately on results with supervision from senior nurses and medical team.
  • Required to co-ordinate the follow up of HIV patients in line with agreed pathways within the department.
  • Maintain accurate documentation to facilitate the continuity of care for patients.
  • Annual health screening, health promotion. Social and mental health assessment.
  • Carry out nurse triage referring to the HIV emergency clinic, Team meetings, Sexual Health & Contraception (SHAC) service, outside agencies and follow up patients as required.
  • Provide and manage dissuasion around sexual risk taking including drug and alcohol use.
