Job description

We are looking for an enthusiastic, experienced, registered nurse with a passion for caring for oncology patients to join our dedicated team

We treat up to 180 patients per day via the SACT Day Unit and Peripheral Sites

We offer treatments to all solid tumour disease groups on our day case unit at The Christie and our peripheral sites at St Ann’s (Little Hulton), St Luke’s ( Winsford) , Tameside Macmillan Unit, Dr Kershaw’s (Oldham) and Bury Hospice

On appointment you would receive a comprehensive 6 week supernumerary training package, in which you have exposure to different anti-cancer treatments in different disease group fields and complete the UKONS passport. You will gain experience in treating a variety of patients with potentially curative diseases, alongside palliative and clinical trial treatments.

As part of the induction program, you will also have the opportunity to work at our SACT peripheral sites. You will be also given the opportunity to work within our nurse led clinics such as pre assessment , pre-treatment consultation and oral SACT clinics

We are open Monday-Friday 8am until 10pm, and on a Saturday from 8am until 6pm. We also open on Bank Holidays and have a range of working shift patterns within the week.

GENERAL DUTIES

1. Provide a supportive role within SACT services for nursing, medical and clerical Staff including peripheral sites around the Greater Manchester area
2. Undertake the nursing care of patients, ensuring privacy & dignity is maintained whilst being aware of physical and psychological needs
3. To give a clear and accurate update at change of duties and ensure accurate documentation of nursing interventions
4. To participate in the rehabilitation of patients and give any necessary instructions, including discharge information
5. Participate in nursing procedures appropriate to the department
6. Support and assist in the induction/training of junior staff/Health Care Assistant’s acting as mentor to designated staff
7. To welcome patients and orientate them to the area
8. Be able to act as co-ordinator and ensure the safe and timely management of patients
9. To liaise with medical and non medical personnel and community organisations
10. To highlight areas of improvement/development within the department and undertake relevant projects
11. To act as support for other nurses in relation to SACT care
12. Safely escort patients to other areas and collect SACT from key departments
13. Assist in the provision of meals / refreshments for patients whilst meeting their nutritional needs
14. Assist in the general housekeeping duties as required
15. Help to maintain a safe environment and report faults/risks etc to the nurse in charge
16. Liaise with nurse responsible for stores/stationery and ordering and assist in the maintenance of stock levels
17. Handles patients personal possessions, ensure cash and valuables kept securely
18. Correct care and custody of controlled drugs and aid the safe storage of medicines and the return of any unused chemotherapy to pharmacy
19. Assist medical staff with procedures
EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT
1. The staff nurse is responsible for their own personal development and maintaining a personal development plan
2. To complete the department introductory pack and preceptor pack
3. Complete Clinincal Skills Training and the UKONS passport
4. Attend all mandatory study days including Resuscitation, moving and handling and fire safety
1. To be working towards band 6 equivalent competency pack
PERSONAL
1. Demonstrate a pleasant and approachable manner and help create and promote a good working relationship
2. Show professional and courteous manner when answering the telephone and other enquires
3. Maintain confidentiality with regard to patient information both at work and outside of working hours
4. To be aware of and adhere to all policies including; sickness and absence, confidentiality, uniform and responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act
5. Report and record all accidents and complaints according to the agreed policy
6. To be aware of limitations and utilise the preceptor system for any issues that arise
7. To show respect for members of the team and endorse the philosophy of giving mutual support.
