Job Description
Project Description
GPS & GNSS technologies are ubiquitous and heavily relied upon for applications which require Position, Navigation and Timing (PNT), however they can be susceptible to jamming & spoofing. LEO satellite communications mega-constellations have the potential to behave as a PNT service, allowing for redundancy in UK Critical National Infrastructure in the event of loss of GPS/GNSS signals.
Satellite Applications Catapult has been working alongside OneWeb to create a timing service that uses the OneWeb communications signal as a timing reference. Satellite Applications Catapult have deployed 5 Calibration Nodes that measure the OneWeb signal. There is now a dataset of timing measurements from over the past year, with more data being taken daily. This data can be correlated to meta-data that describes the system state of the Communications Network and constellation at a given time.
The candidate will be given access to the dataset and will use Python machine learning techniques to support the Satellite Applications Catapult Team in correlating the meta-data provided by OneWeb to features in the measurement data. The candidate will develop techniques (such as multi-regression or neural nets) trained on the OneWeb data to be able to predict a timing correction based on the meta-data. There is also an opportunity to build a database for the measurement data.
At the end of the 2 months, the candidate will gain an understanding in Satellite Communications and Machine Learning techniques applied to a live, complex system and will have contributed to the development of a new timing service. The outcome of this project will be a model trained on the data that can describe and predict the behaviour of the OneWeb Constellation performing as a timing service.
Who we're looking for:
- The candidate will have experience in Python and has worked with reading, processing and visualising data sets. The candidate will have experience in data handling, reading and writing to a database and will have some knowledge of machine learning applications. The candidate will have a good understanding of Physics and be comfortable with complex systems thinking and problem solving.
Skills and Experience required:
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Powerpoint)
- Keenness to learn new data analytics techniques and basic proficiency in Python or Matlab. Problem solving skills and teamwork.
- Basic knowledge of communications systems and the space sector.
Process details:
8 weeks minimum fixed term contract to be agreed with successful candidate. In-person Induction Event to be held on 19 June 2023, and an in-person/hybrid Showcase Event to be held at the 2023 UK Space Conference in Belfast between 21 November to 23 November.
5 days holiday to be taken during the placement
How we work:
We strive to create a high trust environment that enables team members to bring their whole selves to work – this helps to create the foundations of an innovation culture. Our shared values are critical to this:
- We care - for our people, our partners, and our planet
- We connect - and engage with people and ideas
- We learn - and grow, as people and as an industry
Underpinning this is our belief in great teams, our combined efforts will always deliver outcomes beyond that of any individual providing we are honest through debate, experiment and reflect, and create shared resolutions in support of our purpose. Live these values, work to our principles, take ownership to deliver, and we are certain you will thrive with us.
This job description set outs the skills and experience we believe are needed to be able to do this job but, research also tells us women are much more likely than men to take this list of requirements as absolute and self-select out of the process. If you think you can deliver this role then we want to hear from you, regardless of the boxes you didn’t tick.
