The Speech and Language Therapy service for the acute and neuro-rehabilitation beds at Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) has an exciting opportunity for a band 7 highly specialist SLT to work within Parkinson’s Disease service multi-disciplinary team. This is a new post and will deliver a focussed SLT service for this patient group and work closely with the MDT for an integrated approach to their care. The role includes attendance at Parkinson’s disease MDT clinic, requiring the working pattern to include Wednesdays.
This is a permanent post with 5 sessions available.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will work alongside other SLTs working with outpatients, with other Band 7s across the service, and with members of the Parkinson’s disease MDT. The post holder will work closely with the SLT leads for a strategic approach, business case development, and to ensure governance and a quality service.
The post holder with provide a specialist clinical service and also support the team to provide high quality Speech and Language Therapy service We are looking for someone with advanced clinical reasoning, critical thinking and reflection skills. The post will give the holder the opportunity to lead on strategic developments with the support of their colleagues and line manager, which will develop their leadership skills as well as developing their clinic specialist knowledge.

Service delivery
To work autonomously to provide a coordinated and highly specialist service to designated specialism within a multi-disciplinary/multi-agency context and inform and advise the service leads as to training, resources, trends and development needs
To work collaboratively with a variety of different agencies/professionals ensuring management and treatment meets the holistic needs, providing a well co-ordinated care plan for specialism/setting
To represent the Speech and Language Therapy service at agreed forums
To represent speech, language and communication and/or dysphagia needs at agreed forums
To participate in multi- disciplinary projects as agreed.
Clinical Practice
To independently manage, triage and prioritise own complex caseload providing a highly specialist SLT assessment, formulation, diagnosis, intervention and advice based on evidence based practice
To undertake, interpret, and act on complex information gathered from a range of sources, including instrumental investigations, diagnostic formal and informal assessments, and information from other agencies and professionals, using sound knowledge of evidence based practice, advanced clinical reasoning skills and experience in applying relevant treatment approaches.
To develop and provide highly specialist packages of care to individuals working as an integral part of a multi-disciplinary team across a variety of agencies and locations
To mentor, supervise, teach and develop SLT colleagues and other professionals within area of expertise
To effectively delegate to assistant SLT, administrative and other staff.
Clinical Governance
To proactively contribute to regional / national RCSLT Clinical Excellence Groups and Hubs as well as other relevant groups
To maintain and demonstrate own CPD , keeping up to date with clinical developments & current research and evidence based practice to ensure own and others practice is safe and effective
To contribute to team objectives and clinical governance activities of the Trust, reflecting local and national priorities
To be responsible for planning, provision, monitoring and evaluation of programmes of learning and development to family/carers, paid carers and professionals as appropriate.

Responsibility for Patient/Client Care
The post-holder is an autonomous practitioner who is responsible for the assessment, formulation, diagnosis, treatment and discharge within a designated specialism/setting
Contributes to the development, implementation of and monitoring of standards for the clinical specialism.
Identifies and manages clinical risk in own practice
Contributes to the Service clinical governance activities.
Gives highly specialist advice to MDT colleagues regarding timing and type of intervention, and further investigations, for a variety of patients.
Is responsible for the mentoring and supervision of junior speech and language therapists and assistant speech and language therapists
Deals with a full range of complaints in relation to clinical specialism, liaising with PALs, families and leads.
Responsibility for Policy/Service Development
Implements department guidelines and procedures in line with Regional and National initiatives that influence service provision,
Participates in multi- disciplinary projects and specialist areas of Speech and Language Therapy work as agreed with the line manager

Maintains clinical and administrative records in accordance to team and trust standards and provide clinical data to the head of service as required.
Responsibility for financial and physical resources
Contributes to the specification and justification of equipment and goods
Responsible for ensuring any equipment (communication aids, assessments, stethoscopes, books) are complete and safe to use, ensuring standards of infection control and safety are maintained, including equipment loaned to patients.
Ensures the safe carriage, storage and proper use of equipment, working within lifting and handling guidelines.
Monitors stock levels in own service area and request new equipment as appropriate for use with specialist client group
Responsibility for HR
Develops and provides effective induction, mentoring, training and clinical supervision and assist with caseload monitoring of less experienced staff in the designated specialism
Provides supervision and direction for Speech and Language Therapy Assistants, co-workers, support staff and volunteers
Provides day to day co-ordination & support for clinical education of students in liaison with universities to ensure expected quality standards are met ( as required)
Responsible for building capacity and capability in others through planning, provision, monitoring and evaluation of formal and informal programmes of learning and development to other professionals within specialist clinical area.

Essential criteria
- Recognised Speech & Language Therapy Degree Qualification.
- Additional postgraduate training up to master’s degree equivalent
- Health and Care Professions Council License to Practice
