The Critical Care Directorate are seeking to recruit to a Speciality Doctor to support the senior Consultant Team. These posts will be dedicated to Critical Care and provide training and development opportunities.
The post-holder will be expected to work in a teaching hospital unit with a broad case mix which includes all medical and surgical sub-specialties excluding solid organ transplantation. UHNM Trust provides a wide variety of tertiary specialist services in addition to serving the local community.
The Department of Intensive Care Medicine at the UHNM is recognised as a training unit for Intensive Care Medicine and the post holders will carry out similar duties to the trainees at SpR level.
This post is open to experienced SHOs and SpRs in Anaesthesia, Medicine or Surgery. This post would be excellent for doctors wishing to gain experience in the state of the art practice of intensive care medicine, gain clinical knowledge and experience to help get through exams. There is an active consultant led dedicated intensive care teaching programme weekly and the opportunity to participate and lead in research and service development within the remit of intensive care medicine.
The University Hospitals of North Midlands is one of the largest hospitals in the UK and is a specialised cancer centre providing services to the local population and surrounding areas including the Midlands and North Wales. It is the main teaching hospital for Keele University’s Undergraduate Medical School.
Critical care at UHNM has 36 General and Neuro-intensive care beds covered by 12 Consultants, Junior medical staff and ACCP’s providing cover for the unit. There is a strong multi-disciplinary ethos. The candidate will join a tier of 8 specialty doctors / ACCPs providing daytime and 1:8 on call cover for the critical care unit. The post is predominantly critical care but there is the option to have base specialty sessions in Anaesthesia if desired to maintain competencies.
There also is scope for training provision with the expectation that the candidate will contribute to audit/governance and have opportunities to develop higher level skills.
The UHNM is a tertiary level referral centre and is a designated Major Trauma Centre and has one of the busiest Emergency Departments in the UK with all facilities based on a Single Site.
To provide a Registrar level cover to the Department of Intensive Care Medicine. The requirements of the post will be tailored to meet the experience and the special interest needs of the successful candidate, although the primary scope of responsibility is to General Intensive Care Unit patients.
Clinical Duties
1.Management of patients in the critical care units and associated areas at the level of Junior registrar/ ST3 equivalent or above.
2.Provide on-call registrar cover 1:8 rota; compliant with EWTD
3.Provide independent immediate care to critically ill patients including managing airways emergencies with support from on call team.
4.Develop a specific field of interest within the remit of critical care (need to be agreed with the Educational Supervisor) and achieve competencies in the given field. The field of interest would depend on the availability of the facility and training in that domain.
