Job description
We are looking for enthusiastic and motivated nurses and midwives who are passionate about delivering public health interventions to the local community. This course will prepare you for independent practice as a Health Visitor/School Nurse. The post holder will undertake the specialist practitioner course at both Bucks New University and Oxford Brookes University starting in September 2023. The course will run for one academic year at whichever university is chosen. The course will enable the post holder to develop opportunities to gain knowledge, understanding and skills in Health Visiting/School Nursing practice. During the course, the student’s time will be divided between university lectures and tutorials; placement in the community; and study time. The student will work under the direction of the Community Practice Teacher (CPT) and an allocated supervisor through all stages of training. They will be actively involved in the assessment, planning and provision of care to clients / patients and contribute to the public health agenda either in groups or on an individual basis with clients of the CPT’s or supervisor’s caseload. The student will work jointly with their CPT to ensure that progress is achieved through the curriculum, and to facilitate successful completion of assignments and practical assessments at each stage of their programme.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The specific accountabilities of this role will be flexible and will change to meet the needs of the organisation as required but will include (or be equivalent in nature to) those listed below:
- To complete the required further education at level 6/7 to provide and maintain a high standard of skilled Health Visiting/School Nursing practice for individuals, groups, and communities in a variety of settings in accordance with the accredited faculty syllabus.
- The specialist practice student Health Visitor/School Nursing works under the direction of the CPT, who is a member of the locality Health Visiting/School Nursing Team. The student will work with the CPT’s or supervisor’s client group under supervision.
- To work with CPT and university lecturers to reflect on academic learning and practice, contribute to assessment of progress, plan learning objectives and submit academic coursework according to university deadlines.
- Provide and maintain high standards of skilled care for clients in a variety of community settings, in compliance with the protocols and the guidelines of Solutions4Health.
- To assess and re-assess care needs, develop, implement, and evaluate packages of care in liaison with and under the direct tutelage of the CPT / supervisor.
- To regularly take charge, under supervision, of a defined caseload, to develop the required managerial skills, including the allocation of work, supervision and support of junior staff.
- To respond effectively to the local population health needs through working within the team.
- Participate in Clinical Governance activities such as clinical audit.
- Comply with current evidence-based guidelines, and the relevant Solutions4Health policies and procedures.
- Reports any accidents, incidents or near misses, in line with current Solutions4Health policy.
Communications and Working Relationships
- To be personally accountable for professional and ethical actions and ensure compliance with the NMC Code: Standards of conduct, performance and ethics for nurses and midwives.
- To work under the direct supervision of the CPT/university.
- To work in clinical placement with the facilitation and supervision of a CPT/Supervisor to make the theory/practice links necessary to become a confident, competent specialist practitioner.
- To work effectively with other members of the multi-disciplinary healthcare team.
- Demonstrate commitment to team working and collaboration with the other professionals in Primary, Secondary, and Social Care, Education, and the Voluntary sectors.
- Participate in 1-1 and team managerial meetings and clinical supervision in accordance with Solutions4Health policy.
- Maintain professional competence and personal development by participation in mandatory training.
- To utilise effective systems of communication to ensure continuity of care for clients and patients on the caseload. This will include secure use of email and electronic records.
- To communicate with clients, children, and their families in a sensitive manner, using listening skills to undertake an assessment of the client’s needs.
- To use interpreters and bilingual health advocates as needed to enable families with English as a second language and those with sensory impairment to access the service.
- To communicate effectively with other members of the team and relevant professionals in statutory and non-statutory organisations, using clear written and verbal means of communication.
- To attend and contribute to professional and team meetings.
Clinical Responsibility
- To act in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code of Professional Conduct and other relevant standards in relation to Health Visiting/School Nursing practice.
- To liaise with colleagues, GPs, Social Services and other statutory and voluntary agencies.
Decision Making
- To contribute to the setting of caseload priorities in conjunction with other members of the Team, that reflects individual rights, equality and diversity.
- To ensure the efficient and effective use of all resources to meet the assessed and on-going needs of service users and their carers.
- To demonstrate the skills required to identify own learning needs in line with the curriculum and practice experience and undertake activities to seek out and coordinate experiences to meet these learning needs, in collaboration with the Institute of Higher Education and the CPT/Supervisor.
