Job description

An exciting opportunity is available within the Clinical Chemistry Department in LCL for a HCPC registered BMS to come join our fast paced and highly motivated team.

The ideal candidate will have a BSc in Biomedical Science or equivalent, be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council as a BMS and have completed the IBMS Specialist Portfolio (Clinical Chemistry) or have equivalent proven experience at band 6 level in Biochemistry. We will consider and support trainee BMS’s who are close to completing their registration portfolio and are close to verification. Evidence of continual professional development (CPD) will be expected to be demonstrated at interview.

Candidates without a Specialist Portfolio may be considered however they would start on the band 5 pay scale until completion of in house competencies and commencement of out of hours shift rota where they would move to the bottom of the band 6 pay scale and be expected to complete their specialist portfolio within 23 months.

The successful applicant will be part of the LCL Clinical Chemistry team, and be expected to rotate across all 3 hospital sites: Aintree University Hospital, Broadgreen Hospital and Royal Liverpool Hospital. Each lab is equipped with modern analysers and the successful candidate would be expected to work autonomously on the Out of Hours shift rota after a period of training.

Job Summary

To act as an experienced state registered Biomedical Scientist specialising in clinical biochemistry to perform a comprehensive range of routine and specialised biochemical analyses. To take appropriate action on the results obtained. To use developed knowledge and skills to provide specialist advice and guidance to service users. To maintain highly complex analytical equipment in optimum operational condition. To utilise necessary interpersonal skills to ensure effective liaison with service users to provide the best care for the patient.

The post holder is expected to utilise knowledge & skills to be able to manage their own daily, assigned workload efficiently and effectively with reference to Departmental SOP’s and Policies.

Key responsibilities

To maintain specialist technical and analytical knowledge by participating in CPD.

To maintain State Registration with the Health Professions Council (HPC)

To conform to the HPC Code of Conduct for Biomedical Scientists.

To ensure compliance with departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) which reflect local and national standards of work practice e.g. United Kingdom Accreditation Services (UKAS) standards.

To have developed the knowledge and expertise necessary to perform specialised Biochemistry procedures during rotation through the highly specialised laboratory sections associated with a teaching hospital tertiary referral role.

Scientific & Technical

To assess the suitability and appropriateness of samples submitted to the laboratory and to take remedial action when required.

To analyse specimens for screening, diagnostic and clinical management of patients using complex, specialised and very expensive equipment.

To interpret technical validity of results, which may be anomalous, incomplete, complex or conflicting, using professional knowledge and experience.

To make technical assessments of method and instrument performance by monitoring quality control used on specialist laboratory methods and analytical systems.

To troubleshoot, repair and carry out maintenance on specialist equipment .

To make fine adjustments to analytical systems to ensure specialist equipment is kept in optimal operational condition.

To resolve problems relating to breakdown/unavailability of analytical systems.

To implement alternative analytical methods and strategies in the event of technical failure.

To ensure satisfactory and timely completion and validation of routine and specialist biochemistry analyses.

To ensure correct technical validation of results to allow Clinical Scientists and/or Medical Staff to provide appropriate medical intervention.

To ensure prompt referral of results that exceed action limits to duty biochemist and clinical staff.

To be responsible for maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of Point of Care Testing (POCT) ward based analytical systems.

To authorise the use of ward based POCT analysers by ward staff following maintenance.

To monitor and control ward based POCT analysers remotely by using the RapidLink remote control computer system.

To interpret clinical request forms to plan and prioritise workload according to clinical urgency and to liaise with medical staff, if required.
