UnspecifiedAs a Software Apprentice with Raytheon UK you will achieve a Level 6, BSc (Hons) in Digital & Technology Solutions (an industry standard degree equivalent to a Computer science degree) alongside gaining 3.5 years of industry experience with a industry leading business.
You will have the opportunity to experience various projects giving you a breadth and depth of skills in a range of programming languages, methodologies and tools complimenting skills acquired through your studies. Your development will be regularly reviewed and supported by both Raytheon and an appointed mentor at Staffordshire University, to allow you to be supported and continuously learn.
Every 12 weeks you will spend 4 days onsite at Staffordshire University (costs are covered by Raytheon UK), with the remaining 11 weeks spent onsite at our Manchester or Gloucester office. Your time will be split between real projects, and you will have at least one day a week to focus on learning through multiple sources;
- Apprentice Project - training exercise
- One-on-one mentorship from Senior Software Engineers
- A variety of online courses and internal training/knowledge shares
- Individual research and learning into new technologies
- Dedicated time to focus on university work (minimum of 950 hours of off the job training as part of the 3.5 years degree)
Responsibilities:
During your apprenticeship you will works across numerous areas of Software Development with the focus being on continuing your learning so you can confidently perform the duties of a Software Engineer.
With your time split between dedicated learning time and on the job learning that will consist of:
- Participating in daily meetings and stand ups with engineering teams
- Software Development – working on a range of tickets likely alongside other engineers or independently as your confidence grows
- Software Testing and understanding the full Software development lifecycle
- Supporting work estimation activities
We use a broad range of Software languages however some things that you can expect to cover and learn include:
- JavaScript/Typescript – MERN stack, including frameworks such as Angular, React
- Cloud based technologies such as AWS, Azure
- Python including FastAPI and Swagger
- Java
- Architectural design principles
- Relational and non-relational Databases
- Infrastructure programming such as Terraform, Ansible & Chef
Essential skills:
- GCSEs in Maths and English at grade 4/C or above
- A-Levels or equivalent (BTEC) at C or above
- You must be eligible and willing to go through SC clearance with the aim of progressing to DV
- One or more of the skills mentioned in the below sections
Desirable skills:
We have plenty of engineers that took a non-traditional routes to software engineering. So, you maybe somebody with an analytical and logical mind-set (e.g. experience of languages / music) and have the below interests without formal IT education – we would still love to hear from to you! We are looking for a diverse apprenticeship team who all have an interest in technology, with some software experience such as:
- Creating and maintaining a website
- Developing a game
- Personal software projects
- Contribution to open-source projects
- Online courses
- Tech blogs
- Github or StackOverflow profiles
Desirable Personal Qualities:
- Analytical and inquisitive mind-set
- A curiosity around all things tech
- Appetite for self-learning
- The ability to work within a team setting and independently as required
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills – a lot of software engineering includes teamwork and discussing complex concepts clearly

Over the course of the apprenticeship, you will work closely with Senior Engineers, seeing your level of work and responsibilities grow as you continue to learn supported by both the Raytheon team and Staffordshire University.
Once you have completed your Level 6 apprenticeship, we offer great opportunities to continue your Software Engineer career with Raytheon. You will continue to have the opportunity to expand your learning and work with new technologies whilst taking on more Senior Software Engineering positions – maybe even helping mentor our Apprentices of the future!

We run our apprenticeships from either our Manchester or Gloucester offices, you must be able to commute to one of these offices weekly, with potential infrequent travel to other offices. We accept candidates looking to relocate however cannot offer relocation payments for this scheme. Successful candidates will spend 5 days on campus at Staffordshire University at the start of each semester (travel costs covered by Raytheon UK for University visits).
