Wellcome Collection is a free museum and library exploring health and human experience. Through exhibitions, collections, live programming, digital content and services, broadcast and publishing, we create opportunities for people to think deeply about the connections between science, medicine, life and art.
We are part of Wellcome, a global charitable foundation. Wellcome improves health for everyone by funding science, leading policy and advocacy campaigns, and building partnerships.
We are looking for a Software Engineer to join the Digital Engagement team in Wellcome Collection, helping us develop and improve our website and digital platform. On our website, visitors can learn about upcoming events and exhibitions, researchers can search our catalogues to discover our collections, and readers can enjoy our writing and stories.
You will be a vital part of a multidisciplinary digital product team, working collaboratively with other software engineers, designers, user researchers and product managers to build high quality open source software that supports work and empowers teams across all of Wellcome Collection.
Wellcome is open to a variety of flexible working patterns and locations within the United Kingdom. Options around where and how you work can be discussed during the interview stage.
In this role you will:
  • Develop and maintain Wellcome Collection's websites and services to meet the evolving needs of the organisation and support its strategy.
  • Work collaboratively with other disciplines in a multi-disciplinary product team.
  • Develop readable and maintainable code.
  • Take part in code reviews and ensure constant feedback with other developers and engineers in your team.
  • Ensure deadlines are met, and that coding standards and guidelines are followed.
To be successful in this role you will have:
  • A good understanding and experience (at least 2 years) of either server-side languages and technologies (eg Node.js), or modern frontend practices (eg React, Typescript).
  • Experience learning and implementing using new technologies.
  • Experience working with modern development practices, git, CI etc.
  • Some understanding of Agile processes and product teams.
It would be a bonus if you had any of these, but don’t worry if not - we value a wide variety of experiences:
  • Experience working with both server-side and frontend technologies.
  • Some understanding of cloud computing platforms (eg AWS, GCP, Azure).
  • Understanding of server-side languages other than JavaScript. like Scala and Python
