Software Engineering Management Lead
£80,000+ plus excellent benefits, including up to 10% employer pension contributions, private healthcare, an annual incentive scheme (based on personal and business performance) and a company car or £6,000 car allowance (Work Level 4)
UK-based, with occasional travel to our Manchester office (hybrid working)
We’re looking for a Software Engineering Management Lead to join us to lead the people side of software engineering at Co-op and help our practice to operate at scale. In this role, you’ll line manage 8-10 Engineering Managers, who are directly responsible for more than 100 of our engineering colleagues and 50 of our third-party engineers: from Software, Platform and Front-End Engineers to Quality Coaches. As a Software Engineering Management Lead, you’ll work closely alongside our Head of Engineering and Chief Engineer. You’ll be responsible for the people side of our practice, focusing on recruitment, retention, assignment, career progression, and succession planning to make sure we have a healthy pipeline of engineering talent across Co-op.
What you’ll do
- Lead the people side of our engineering practice
- Line manage our team of Engineering Managers, helping them to navigate challenges within their own teams
- Help to build communities within a large engineering practice
- Develop our career progression framework
- Build and maintain positive relationships with other discipline leaders (e.g., Head of Product, Head of Design etc)
- Manage relationships with our third-party engineer providers
- Work closely alongside our Talent Acquisition & Development colleagues to plan and deliver effective engineering attraction and recruitment campaigns
This role would suit people who have
- Experience working alongside Software Engineers within product teams
- Experience line managing managers
- Experience building and scaling software engineering teams
- Experience scaling and operating at this number of engineers
- Good relationship-building skills and the ability to influence and challenge people inclusively
- Good collaboration skills, and experience working with third party providers
- An appetite for navigating the challenges of a large organisation
