About the role:

Working closely with a Lead Software Developer you’ll be part of a digital team that is putting the user at the heart of everything we do, making sure that we use digital in a way that is inclusive, building skills and confidence, so that it is the channel of choice for those that can and wish to interact and transact with us digitally.

You will work alongside our experienced development teams and get straight into providing real world solutions. We are looking for skilled, experienced, enthusiastic Software Developers who can help us build applications and digital services that make a real difference to people’s lives.

You’ll be responsible for designing, building, testing and delivering applications as part of a multi-functional agile delivery team.

We currently use a varied set of tools and encourage and promote personal development. Whilst we are not focused on one technology and we are starting to introduce a wider tech stack, we currently have a lot of .NET, C#, and Oracle base products.

Data is also a key component, as our systems inform business intelligence.

As a software developer the role is truly rewarding and varied as we work across all departments within the council. Our aim is to use and build industry leading technology and systems, and you will

  • work with your team, project teams and other departments.

  • develop/integrate inhouse solutions and work with third party systems.

  • work in an agile fashion.

  • learn and use emerging technologies in such a fast-paced area.

  • provide solutions for our residents, businesses, and internal departments.

  • influence, make change, innovate, and help us transform digitally.

  • contribute to our software engineering community.

  • be a logical thinker, solve problems, work under your own initiative and be pro-active.

About you:

You’ll be passionate about creating user-centered digital services. You will work in a multi-disciplinary team delivering services that help transform how our residents interact with us and take pride in making services that delight and empower our users. You will enjoy working in an open and co-operative environment, working towards the shared goal of transforming our services.

You will have experience with the full software development life cycle, including analysis, design, programming, testing and deployment. You will understand software design principles and be proficient in object-oriented design and programming. Knowledge of system architectural design and design patterns would be advantageous, and you will have experience of relational databases, including database design and SQL.

Knowledge of development practices and techniques will be beneficial, as will an understanding of the importance of testing, a familiarity with testing strategies and experience working in an Agile environment.

You will have knowledge and experience of web development and programming, such as back-end development and web service APIs, and/or front-end development using modern tools and frameworks. It is important you understand web security and accessibility.

You will have experience with version control systems such as GIT, ideally having some experience with containerisation and the deployment of applications to cloud environments.
