Job description

Job Introduction

We are looking for an Apprentice Care Support Worker / Healthcare Assistant to join our Children’s Continuing Care Team who provide care to children who have complex health needs, this includes children and young people who have tracheostomies, gastrostomies and other health related issues.

As well as learning through your apprenticeship, we provide full training in all areas of the job role and will support you to become confident in managing these health needs to really make a positive difference to the lives of the children and families that we care for.

We have full and part time opportunities available to join our team, working across the week with one in four weekends required. This role predominantly consists of night shifts, working between the hours of 10pm to 7am.

Our care support workers will support one child through their full journey of care, providing a supportive and compassionate care package. There is also opportunity to take on additional care packages depending on the hours you will work. Some of our team members have gone on to be assistant practitioners and have taken on additional courses to further their professional development.

We also have roles available in Trowbridge, Salisbury and Chippenham.

Main Responsibilities

As an Apprentice care support worker, you will be expected to provide compassionate and high-quality care to a child over night by following the child’s individual care plan. You will be an important part of the lives of the children and families that we work with by building rewarding and professional working relationships with them.

As part of each shift, you will complete shift check lists to ensure you have the correct equipment to provide safe care to each child. Throughout the shift, there may be different types of care needed, which will always be in accordance with a care plan set out by one of our nurses. You may also provide personal care, observing and monitoring signs that the child is in pain or becoming unwell and knowing and recognising when to call the parents in the night for advice and support.

Shifts usually start at 10pm and finish at 7am. Each night shift takes place in the family home environment, however you would have access to an on call staff member in case you have any queries or issues.

The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for someone who is kind, caring and willing to learn new skills within the health and care sector. You will be an excellent communicator and listener and can work as part of a team but can also work autonomously in line with the training that will be provided.

We would like someone who can recognise their own limitations and ask for help when they need it or when a task is outside of what they have been trained to do.

It is essential that you have a valid UK Driving Licence and access to a car as you will be expected to travel to and from family homes.

We will provide you with all the training and support that you need to become competent and confident with all aspects of the child’s care, including using specialist medical equipment.
