Job Title: Site Supervisor

Grade: E

Working Hours: 37 hours per week,

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 7.30am to 4.00pm,

Wednesday 7.30am to 3.30pm

Accountable To: Headteacher

Line Management: School Business Manager

Role

To support the school governors and headteacher in the maintenance and development of the premises so that, as a resource, it most effectively supports the educational needs of the school.

Job Outline

Under the direction of the school governing body and any such person as they should nominate, and in accordance with the practices and procedures of the local authority, the site supervisor will have responsibility for:

Job Detail

Security

  • Ensure the building is unlocked at appropriate times.
  • Designated key holder and principal contact for police and emergency services out of normal school hours.
  • Monitor the activities of visitors and contractors’ staff to ensure the security of the building and contents and ensure that such visits do not unduly interrupt the work of the school. Be present at the closing of the school to assist staff, pupils and visitors.
  • Ensure internal security procedures are adhered to: reporting any issues to the Headteacher/Business Manager.
  • Regularly walking around the buildings and grounds to monitor maintenance standards, lighting and heating use and that windows and doors are secured. Report and act upon any issues with the appropriate staff.
  • Be vigilant of any strangers on site, challenge all visitors and report as necessary.
  • Make sure that keys and locks work and are maintained.
  • Provide safe access to buildings and classrooms in the event of snow, minor floods and similar emergency situations.
  • Initiate the necessary procedures quickly and accurately relating to the emergency services, e.g. Police, Fire, Gas and Electricity Board.

Health and Safety

  • Test fire alarm call points weekly and regularly check other fire equipment e.g. extinguishers for damage or expiration; maintain logs of all checks.
  • Ensure actions from Fire Risk Assessment are completed.
  • Provide safe access to buildings and classrooms in the event of snow, minor floods and similar emergency situations.
  • Initiate the necessary procedures quickly and accurately relating to the emergency services, e.g. Police, Fire, Gas and Electricity Board.
  • Carry out weekly inspection of all outdoor play equipment and make good any faults found.
  • Manage all contractors on site, ensuring that all health and safety requirements are met, monitor their performance and inspect completed work.
  • Ensure appropriate Legionella checks are carried out and recorded. Review Legionella Risk Assessment and identify actions required.
  • Responsible person in regards to Asbestos, Fire, COSHH and Legionella.
  • Participate in the continuing development of robust, transparent health and safety systems and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations and if unsure seek advice from the Headteacher/Business Manager.

Porterage and Maintenance

  • Transfer goods and materials delivered to the school to appropriate locations around the school. Assist with assembly of goods received where necessary and report any defects.
  • Set out and clear away furniture, equipment and other items when required.
  • Store, move and set out furniture and equipment in accordance with the pattern of activities in the school or the requirements of persons/groups using the premises outside school hours.
  • Monitor stock levels as appropriate.
  • Ensure health and safety policies are followed in terms of hazards and exits and entrances kept clear for the safe use and passage of all users.
  • Carry out duties in accordance with the school’s Health and Safety Policy.
  • Perform minor maintenance and repairs to plant, equipment, furniture and the fabric of the building.
  • Maintain standards of interior decoration, to include paintwork and woodwork.
  • Undertake appropriate minor school development building work.
  • Prepare job related purchase requests for approval by the Headteacher/Business Manager.
  • Report defects in fabric, equipment, etc., to the Business Manager.
  • Monitor contract work and quality control.
  • Carry out PAT testing as per schedule and record.
  • Assist the Business Manger to maintain the school’s asses register by reporting all equipment and furniture movement.
  • Replace lamps and domestic fuses as required.
  • Purchase materials for minor repairs.
  • Liaise with the Headteacher, Site Supervisor and NCC Land & Buildings as appropriate, to ensure the smooth running of the building during maintenance work at minimum impact on the school’s normal operation.

Grounds Maintenance

  • Oversee the grounds maintenance works whilst contractors are on site.
  • Trim and prune as appropriate all the trees and shrubs around the site. Remove weeds from fences along the frontage of the school grounds and from beds and gravelled areas.
  • Ensure that all hard areas, play areas, drives, surrounds and gardens are kept neat and tidy, free from litter etc.
  • Clear leaves, moss and detritus as appropriate.
  • Clean and clear all drains and gullies to ensure effective and healthy operation.
  • Clean and clear all gutters to ensure effective and healthy operation where reasonable access can be obtained.

Environmental Management

  • Manage the cleaning staff and direct their work, referring problems of performance to the Business Manager. Monitor the quality of cleaning in all parts of the school. Ensure that all facilities are in a clean and acceptable state prior to lettings.
  • Clean up, effect minor repairs and make good following minor emergency situations, e.g. small fires, damage to flooring or spillages.
  • Clean up after incidents of sickness or toilet problems that occur during the school day.
  • Arrange the safe disposal of all waste materials, equipment and furniture beyond repair.
  • Ensure that all cleaning fluids, equipment and other possible hazardous materials are safely stored and handled in accordance with proper procedures.
  • Ensure that combustible materials are stored appropriately and that combustible waste is not allowed to accumulate.
  • Subject to reasonable access, ensure that all gullies, gutters and rainwater pipes are cleared and free running.
  • Ensure that all emergency exits are in good working order and kept free from obstruction.
  • Ensure that all drives and approaches to the premises are kept clear of snow, ice and obstructions and apply grit/salt as appropriate.

  • To carry out other relevant duties as may be reasonably requested by the Headteacher/Business Manger commensurate with the pay and grade of the post.
