Fortum O&M UK Limited - Teesside
Tees REP Biomass Power Plant is a 100% biomass fuelled power station located at Tees Port on the River Tees in Northeast England operated and maintained by Fortum O&M (UK) Ltd. The installed capacity of the plant 299 MW gross, designed to operate with pellets, woodchip, or a mixture of both. The generated Power is exported to the Lackenby substation ~ 6 km away from the power plant site location. The main components are a Circulating fluidized bed boiler (CFB), Steam Turbine Generator (STG), Air Cooled Condenser (ACC), Fuel Handling System (FHS) with Continuous Ship Unloading system (CSU). Fortum O&M UK Ltd are responsible for the operations and maintenance of the plant on 24 hour / 365 days a year process, this to maximise plant availability and efficiency.

Job Summary:
The Shift Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the plant from within the central control room and out in the field on a 24 hour shift system.
As part of a team, your duties will include plant and equipment process monitoring, changes to optimise performance during start-up, shutdown, normal and abnormal operation of plant equipment within health, safety and environmental compliance.
You will monitor the plant DCS system and field processes to establish fault diagnosis and rectification.
Responsibilities will include routine tasks and testing of plant equipment from the DCS control room and out in the field. Updating the shift logbook with plant and process changes, defects and planned works to Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
You will ensure a diligent shift handover is carried out to ensure effective communication of the plant status to the oncoming shift.
You will carry out isolations and de-isolations of mechanical and process equipment ensuring safety from equipment is implemented.
The Shift Operator will assist the maintenance team in carrying out plant maintenance.
Being totally flexible, you will be expected to carry out other duties within your competencies to ensure objectives are achieved.
Support the Shift Engineer with their day-to-day duties and deputise when required.
Key Responsibilities:
Operation of the plant during start-up, shutdown, and normal operation from the central control room. DCS monitoring and alarm handling.
Diagnose and make safe or rectify plant faults from the central control room.
Ensure plant defects are reported within the CMMS.
Testing plant emergency and non-emergency equipment from the central control room.
Continuous personal development within the organisation to achieve continual improvements.
Provide effective communication to the Field Operator ensuring all instructions are clear and understood.
Must ensure at all times the full awareness of the plant status and work activities on plant equipment.
Report any potential safety issues and control any hazards as required.
Support and participate in the development and review of Operational processes, including associated Work Instructions and Supporting Documentation.
Carry out risk assessments to ensure activities are completed in a safe manner at all times.
Work as part of a team striving for continual improvement in minimising Health & Safety and Environmental risks at the plant.
Ensure visitors to site are inducted in the site safety and emergency procedures.
Housekeeping is to be carried out on a regular basis to ensure a high standard of site cleanliness.
Continuous and routine monitoring of the plant to minimise environmental impacts.
Record and report any impacts or potential impacts on the environment to the Shift Engineer.
Contribute towards the team development and provide input to team meetings.
Experience, Qualifications & Skills:
Successfully achieve and complete the Shift Operator development programme within the timescale agreed.
Possess qualifications preferably either Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical or Operational Process related.
Possess a good understanding of large power plant operation from a central control room and out in the field. Including operating plant with a good understanding of safety and environmental compliance.
Have minimum of 3 years power plant DCS operational experience within a central control room environment.
Experience with Computerised Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
Experience of using IT systems associated with a power plant environment.
Excellent communicational skills in English are required at all levels; both verbally and written.
Understanding of a safe system of work i.e. plant isolations and safety documents, permit to work (PTW).
Must be able to demonstrate good organisational skills and decision making.
Have a willingness to operate flexibly over a wide range of work areas.
Ability to think logically and solve problems effectively and efficiently.
Experience of working a 24-hour shift system in an operational environment.
