Service Support Worker
Location: 14 Prestwick, South Ayrshire
Contract: Fixed Term Contract – ending 31stMarch 2023
Hours per week: 14 Hours, 2 x shift patterns: 7 day service; 1.30pm to 9pm Monday to Sunday including weekend / bank holidays
Salary: £19514 - £22381 per annum

We are looking for a caring and resilient person, who can think on their feet in a pressured environment to join our Independent Living team.
Based in fast paced, busy and intense Emergency Department, you will provide practical and emotional support to patients. You will undertake non-medical tasks to free up the medical staff to be able to focus on their clinical role and make visitors' stay as comfortable as possible.
Responsibilities are very varied and include, but are not limited to:
- You will be supporting people home from hospital either from the Emergency Department or following a stay in hospital. You and a colleague will transport service users in an accessible Red Cross vehicle and then help them resettle back into their home. During the resettlement you will be provide some basic practical and emotional support to ensure that the service user is safe and to help reduce failed discharges.
- You will be alert to safeguarding and welfare concerns and will be assessing service users' needs and capturing key information that will help us provide appropriate follow-on support.
- You will be receiving referrals directly from clinical staff at the hospital and will be working with them to prioritise the referrals. Through the service you will play a key role in helping reduce unnecessary hospital admissions and delayed discharges.
- You may also be asked to undertake welfare checks and provide basic practical and emotional support to service users that we are providing follow on support to, to help enable them to live as independently as possible in their own home and prevent hospital re-admission.
Other:
- Escorting patients to assigned departments
- Collecting prescriptions to speed up their discharge
- Providing emotional support/pastoral care while they await treatment
- Providing emotional support to close friends and families
- Ensuring patients have food/drink while waiting for long hours
- Driving patients home when discharged and making sure they are safely settled at home
- Signposting and referring patients to other sources of support in the community
Please note that this service runs from Monday to Sunday (including bank holidays) and successful candidate will be expected to commit to up to 14-hour shifts (flexible days).

- Educated to GCSE level (or equivalent by experience)
