We're currently looking for an enthusiastic, fun, energetic and responsible Activity Leaders and Welfare Leaders (see our other vacancies) to collaborate to lead our social programmes and to provide exemplary pastoral care at our summer schools across the UK and Malta.
ACTIVITY LEADER AND WELFARE LEADER POSITIONS
BSC YL’s summer language centres offer students an excellent Academic programme paired with an exciting social programme. Our Activity Leaders and Welfare Leaders are required to be energetic, responsible and collaborative team players who will help bring core memories to life by helping to organise and deliver our programmes. Activity Leaders and Welfare Leaders are also responsible for safeguarding young learners during onsite activities and off-site excursions as well as providing exemplary pastoral care at our residences or low season homestay centres.

What do activity leaders and welfare leaders do?
Activity Leaders and Welfare Leaders must work side-by-side to throughout the season with lots of crossover duties.
Activity Leaders
BSC YL Activity Leaders will support (and report to) the Activity Manager to run a successful social programme by ensure that students are motivated, on time for sessions and kept safe during this time. Activity Leaders will also plan fun and engaging activities at our residence in the evenings as well as lead excursions close to the course town.
Duties will include:
- Leading a smooth, varied and fun social programme
- Taking activity attendances (on-site activities, evening and excursions)
- Motivating and supervising students
- Ensuring Activity Packs are thoroughly planned and carried out
- Adhering to social programme risk assessments
- Following Covid19 protocols as instructed by Centre Management
- Supervising students during meal times, curfews and break times
- Following all BSC YL Safeguarding Policies and Procedures
- Covering Welfare Leader duties to cover ‘WL’ days off
Welfare Leaders
BSC YL Welfare Leaders will support (and report to) the Welfare Manager to focus on the care, safety and wellbeing of students at the residence whilst helping to implement rules, policies and procedures. The Welfare Leader will act as the ‘welfare’ contact for their designated student house at the residence.
Duties include:
- Ensuring student pastoral care ratios and supervision remain consistent,
- Taking house attendances (in student houses, meal time, wake up, lights out and night duty)
- Planning and maintaining their House Files and adhering to pastoral care risk assessments
- Carry daily House Inspections (of communal areas)
- Ensure cleaning and laundry schedules are followed
- Being aware of all student special requirements
- Following all health & safety protocols, emergency and Covid19 procedures as per instructed by the Centre Management
- Lead evening ‘Student Welfare’ counselling sessions
- Covering Activity Leader duties to cover ‘AL’ days off
WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
The ideal Activity Leader and Welfare Leader candidates will have experience (or an interest) mentoring young learners, an ability to speak to all people from all backgrounds, a genuine interest in Sport/Music or Arts with an energetic and caring nature to ensure our students remain happy and safe during their time with BSC Young Learners.
Activity Leaders/Welfare Leaders should:
- Have the full right to work in the UK
- Be available throughout June and August
- Be able to commit for the duration of the season
- Be motivated, energetic and responsible
- Care about the welfare of Young Learners
- Have a decent local knowledge of the college area and its surroundings
- Be a team player
- Be flexible
- Be willing to learn throughout their contracts
WHAT TO EXPECT?
- Competitive weekly salary
- Accommodation and food are provided (3 meals per day) (Only residential positions)
- Up to 48 hours per week (with 1 full day off per week. To be agreed at the centre.)
- All excursions and attraction entrances costs are included (whilst working the respective shift)
- Working hours may be unsociable due to evening activities, night duty, the times of student arrivals and departures and emergency situations
Safeguarding at BSC YL
BSC YL is committed to safeguarding and maintaining the welfare of children. As part of our Safer Recruitment Policy:
The role requires a criminal record check. All applicants should be on the Enhanced DBS Update Service or willing to enrol on the Update Service once checks are complete. For overseas applicants ‘Certificate of Good Character’/ Police Checks will be required.
Two references (including most recent employer) will be followed up and all gaps in CVs must be explained satisfactorily.
Proof of identity and qualifications will be required at the interview stage. Only those with the right to work in the UK are eligible for any BSC YL position.
All successful candidates will need to pass 2 stages of recruitment to include a 1st Stage interview before attending a 2nd stage virtual Interview either individually or at a BSC YL Assessment Day
This role meets the requirements in respect of exempted questions under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. All applicants who are offered employment will be subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service check (DBS, PVG or Garda) before the appointment is confirmed. This will include details of cautions, reprimands or final warnings as well as convictions.
