Due to a review of the Tree Service priorities, Oxfordshire County Council have new vacancies available.


Oxfordshire County Council recognises the need for action related to climate adaptation and trees are one of the important assets that will enable delivery of key objectives to aid resilience and improve the environmental benefits for residents and visitors across the County.


Senior Tree Officer (PES)

Salary range: £37,261 - £40,478 per annum

The role will cover all areas of the County.

Interview date: Tuesday 7th or Thursday 9th March 2023 – This will be in person, in the County.


Tree Officer

Salary range: £30,151 - £32,909 per annum

The role will predominantly cover the area of Oxford City

Interview date: Tuesday 7th or Thursday 9th March 2023 – This will be in person, in the County.

Work location: All vacancies will be based at Sutton Farm, Stanton Harcourt. You will be

About us


The Tree Service are responsible for ensuring public trees under the responsibility of Oxfordshire County Council are maintained for the long-term benefit of the communities they contribute to.


We are responsible for approximately 400,000 public trees along approximately 4600km of public highway, that we manage and maintain.


The Tree Service works closely with a variety of departments and functions within the County to deliver a holistic approach to tree care.

About our Senior Tree Officer role


Following a review of the Tree Service at Oxfordshire County Council, the responsibility for trees has increased meaning new roles have been created to support the planning process that we manage as the County Council. Due to the Senior Tree Officer being a new post with the focus across our Property, Estates and School sites, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to create and shape key processes.


The Senior Tree Officer (PES) post has been created to ensure specialist knowledge and input can be made available to support the Facilities Management Team with decision making by leading on complex arboricultural matters throughout development, management and planning processes.

These will include:

Town and Country Planning Act Regulation 3

Highways Act s278 agreements

Highways Act s38 agreements


The role will be varied and is focused on problem solving in an innovative way. You will promote transparency and build trust with other departments, our communities and stakeholders through our decision making processes.


You will contribute to tree management of Oxfordshire County Council’s tree stock by supporting Tree Officers in the Tree Service to ensure a holistic and consistent approach to tree care across the County. You will help organise the cyclical site surveys with the Tree Officers and you will shape projects related to increasing canopy cover by identifying tree planting opportunities.

About our Tree Officer role


Your role comes with plenty of variety and is focused on caring for a varied and established tree stock, while identifying opportunities to increase canopy cover.


You could be undertaking a variety of functions that include:

large-scale parish or site specific surveys;

ad-hoc inspections;

building strong working relationships with tree contractors to enable better outcomes;

interaction with the public and Council staff;

opportunities to create your own projects;

expectation to manage your own time to enable delivery of work;

ownership of an area for which there is personal responsibility with support from the Senior Tree Officers and Principal Officer - Arboriculture.

You will contribute to the proactive tree care of Oxfordshire County Council’s tree stock by promoting the Tree Service and the benefits of trees to residents and stakeholders to ensure a holistic and consistent approach to tree care across the County.

About you


Are you an experienced Tree Officer / Arboriculturist who wants a new challenge and the opportunity to deliver and influence tree retention and management to support climate action across one of England’s most beautiful and diverse treescapes?
