Job description
We are looking for an enthusiastic and proactive individual to join the Chemical Compliance Team (CCT), within Waste Industry and Regulatory Services (WIRS), part of Operations Regulatory Services (ORS).
This specialist, technical role focusses on shaping and leading compliance monitoring and, enforcement activities relating to the use of restricted chemicals (as outlined in the 25 Year Environment Plan). This is achieved through surveillance of e-commerce sites and via targeted campaigns and interventions.
You will be the interface between the team, internal partners, and external organisations. Your technical leadership will facilitate sound decisions and ensure the best outcome for the environment. You will be responsible for delivering complex, technical responses to often high profile queries, some of which lead to compliance and enforcement action. You will build resilience in the team; providing training, coaching and mentoring to ensure knowledge and skills are maintained and, work is planned and delivered to the highest possible standard.
You will have a high level of written and oral communication skills, and be able to influence and negotiate with a wide range of internal and external customers. You will be a strong team player with excellent interpersonal skills; capable of leading the team.

WIRS is an ambitious, inclusive department consisting of experienced and knowledgeable regulatory and technical staff. We deliver a variety of technical and compliance related activities across several regulatory regimes; helping to protect and improve the environment. We provide environmental guidance and regulation across the UK and internationally.
Key areas of work are: chemical compliance and regulation, pollution inventory, hazardous waste, waste tracking, and regulatory returns for waste management.

Experience/skills required
Experience/skills required
- Ideally have experience of compliance and enforcement work
- Possession of a Level 2 warrant or, level 1 warrant with a willingness to work towards level 2.
- Ability to plan and deliver a range of activities on time
- Deliver results through others
- Ability to be flexible, resourceful and prioritise work to deliver the best outcomes
- Work with Team Leader on delivery planning
- Strong team player
- Sound political awareness
- Ability to work with a variety of people and build effective relationships
- Promote cross regime working within the department and promote a culture of ‘one team’.
- Chemical’s knowledge is not required but is advantageous

The job will be within WIRS, part of Operations Regulatory Service (ORS) based with other EA National teams at Sheffield. Some attendance at the Sheffield office would be required as agreed with Team Leader. Some national travel may be required when Covid-19 restrictions allow.
