Job Title: SENIOR SUPPORT WORKER
Grade/Salary: Points 59-73, Probation Scales (full-time rate £23,852 to £27,373 pa) plus enhancements for unsocial hours. Entry to a contributory pension scheme is automatic providing the criteria are fulfilled.
Responsible To: The Manager
Job Purpose: The role is working for an ex-offenders' hostel in Central Bristol. Its purpose is to assist the Manager in the achievement of the Approved Premises’ aims and objectives, and to accept responsibility for the management of the Approved Premises in his/her absence.
Period of appointment: Following successful completion of a 6 month probation period leading to permanent contract.
Key duties and responsibilities
Residents:
1. As part of a team of 6 Assistant Managers you will supervise residents and enforce Approved Premises rules in accordance with Approved Premises policy and procedures.
2. To receive referrals, gathering information, assessing risk and determining suitability for admission.
3. To assist in the selection, admission and discharge arrangements for residents in accordance with agreed policy and procedures.
4. To plan and prepare residents for discharge, including liaison with other relevant bodies and families as appropriate.
5. To prepare, implement and review programmes aimed to help the residents reduce their offending behaviour and work towards independent living. This will include counselling; acting as keyworker with selected residents; participating in the running of groups and encouraging residents in a range of leisure and educative activities. Where appropriate it will involve liaison with Probation Officers.
6. To prepare reports, attend court when required and maintain records.
7. To complete statistical and other records, maintain log books and perform any other recurrent tasks as required.
8. To collect and record specified financial transactions, e.g. rent, petty cash.
General
9. To understand fire regulations and health and safety requirements, ensuring these are applied within the Approved Premises at all times.
10. To participate in staff meetings, the staff appraisal scheme, and supervision sessions and to attend training events as agreed with the Manager.
11. To liaise with other Approved Premises staff, Probation Service personnel and other bodies associated with the Approved Premises including Police, DSS, GPs and a range of statutory and voluntary organisations with reference to daily work with residents.
12. To participate in a shift system as required, including weekends, bank holidays and other locally agreed holidays.
13. To assist in the implementation of such policies or guidelines as are adopted by the Committee.
14. To undertake such other duties as may be required and as are commensurate with the grading of the post, and to attend training courses and events as instructed.
15. To be responsible for personal safety and to avoid endangering the safety of colleagues, residents and members of the public.
16. To ensure that output and quality of work is of the highest standard and accords with current legislation/regulations.
17. To comply with the Approved Premises’ anti-discriminatory policies.
Liaison and significant contacts
1. The post holder will have day to day contact with offenders, Probation Service staff, DWP, the Police and Solicitors.
2. The post holder may also have dealings with GPs and psychiatrists, local voluntary projects for accommodation and voluntary work placements and other specialists addressing alcohol, drug and sexual problems, etc.
3. From time to time the post holder will have contact with Magistrates at Court and when they visit the Approved Premises.
Supervision received
Regular supervision will be available through the Manager but the post holder will also be required to work effectively on her/his own initiative.
Residents at the Approved Premises can at times exhibit difficult or disturbed behaviour so the post holder must be mature and able to work calmly during periods of stress.
Appraisal
The post holder will be required to participate in the Annual Appraisal Scheme.
Special notes or conditions
The hours of work are, on average, 37 per week on a shift basis, to include evenings and weekends.

One is on a Monday to Friday 8.30 - 5pm basis (with some flexibility required to work occasional weekends/bank hols), the second is on a rota basis (3, 4 or 5 days working, sometimes until 22.45pm, followed by up to 5 days off).
